Why choose Offbeat Travel?

Offbeat Travel is a destination management company that provides culturally-immersive student and educational travel programs for students in Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Cuba and Puerto Rico.

We pride ourselves on being at the forefront of decolonizing travel by providing travel experiences through a local lens. We believe in multiculturalism, supporting local businesses, and learning by doing.

Our operations are run by in-country teams with decades of experience in non-traditional, impactful and culturally-immersive travel. Our owners are from the places we visit, or trace their lineage there.

We love partnering with small businesses to provide travelers with home-cooked meals, thoughtful lodging and atypical excursions that highlight the people, places, ecosystems, culture and community in the places we live, work and play.

Life Changing

The opportunity to work alongside the community members in the Bateyes is like no other. I have helped work on both installing cement floors and latrines, with help from the local masons. I have had many conversations with community members, either the ones we were building the house for, the masons, community leaders, the kids living in the area, and the men who are working in the cane fields. Also, of these connections opened my eyes to how other people live and the importance of a connection to your community local and global. It exemplifies the concept of shared humanity, that we are all in this together, and it is our job to learn about and help all of those around us. I have returned to the community's multiple times and every time it re-centers my perspective to what and who truly matters in life. I could not recommend it enough!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I would advise anyone who is planning on going on this trip to embrace the moments of uncomfort and there will be moments because I can almost guarantee that you have never done anything like this before. But when you take those chances, the results are remarkable.
Pros
  • Creating a sense of share humanity
  • Understanding and participating in cross cultural exchange.
  • Eye opening to how other people live and how you can change your life in service to others.
What other participants should know
  • It can be hot and uncomfortable physically and emotionally but that will only push you to find yourself more.

A impactful and raw experience.

Serving with Offbeat was truly an immersive experience. Seeing the systemic issues in Los Bateyes was an eye opening opportunity. It was life changing to meet beautiful people dealt with poor conditions and serve alongside them. What a privilege it was to create a powerful change and learn from my family in Los Bateyes. Each time I embark on a service project with Offbeat I learn more and am able to develop a greater understanding of shared humanity. I cannot wait to go back and serve with my people in Los Bateyes.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Step outside of you comfort zone and take every second in. Once you learn why you’re there and the problems that exist you need to reflect and serve with your whole heart.
Pros
  • The Homestay was an incredibly raw and emersive experience.
  • 4 days of service allowed us to get so much done and complete three houses.
  • Reflecting upon the community and myself enhanced my learning in the most special way.

Finding purpose

Before I started doing service in the Bateyes, I really didn’t know what I wanted to do in life or who I was as a person. But every time I’ve gone, I learn more about myself and the people who are being wronged in the bateyes. Each experience has been life-changing, and all I can think about all the time is going back. I have gone to do service in the bateyes 3 times already, with another trip lined up in the future, as well as already saving money for another trip. If this amount of personal commitment that I have for this cause doesn’t show you how life-changing this work is, then I don't know what will.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Talk to everyone you don’t know. Whether you’re in a group of people that you kinda know or completely by yourself, talk to everyone. Especially if you can speak the local language. Which is another piece of advice, learn as much of the local language ahead of time that you can. Being able to communicate with everyone you meet is so vital to making lasting connections. Make connections with everyone.
Pros
  • Wonderful guide/s
  • Great food
  • Lasting work that will benefit communities for decades
What other participants should know
  • Long travel times
  • Annoying bugs
  • Really hot weather (especially in summer months)

Impact of Service

I have been on three projects with Offbeat and have just signed up for my fourth. These projects have truly and honestly changed my life. Getting to immerse yourself so deeply into culture and community is such a privilege. My eyes were opened to a world I couldn’t even imagine. I will forever be grateful for these projects and continue to come back. Every time I learn more than I did before. My travel experience has always been safe and efficient. Each project leader I have been with has been an amazing experience. They are constantly worried about our safety, whether it comes to location, bugs, animals, food, housing, etc. Project leaders will look out for you and make sure you are okay. If you are ever given the opportunity to experience something Offbeat, go for it! I will say it again, my life has been changed for the better because of my travel experiences.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take in every experience and be in the moment. It is not often that an experience like this will come along; make sure you savor it.
Pros
  • The people I met while traveling will always have a place in my heart
  • The food is so delicious and filling everytime.
  • Bonding with my group and my program leaders throughout each project is something i will never forget
What other participants should know
  • Having to leave at the end of the week is the worst part of the entire trip.

Best experience i’ll ever have

Going to the Dominican Republic through Offbeat has completely changed my life! The level of incredibly immersive and impactful service that we get to do is truely life changing, and has helped me in my own life in so many ways. I have seen myself become a better more open minded person and through this experience, I have found a purpose and passion in my life; helping others. I am grateful to this program every day for the people and experiences I have gotten to see and know. I not only am growing as a person myself, but my understanding of this critical issue in this society is forever evolving and changing. I’ve learned so much and it has truly changed my outlook and perspective on life.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Listen! To everything! The stories and perspectives shared with me from the people I met directly in the bateyes is unlike any other. When learning about this critical issue, there is no better people to learn about it and understand it from, than the people directly in the bateyes themselves. The moments in conversation with them were the moments of most comprehension and understanding for them and their situation.
Pros
  • Finding a passion and purpose
  • Understanding of critical needs
  • Meeting people unlike any other
