The opportunity to work alongside the community members in the Bateyes is like no other. I have helped work on both installing cement floors and latrines, with help from the local masons. I have had many conversations with community members, either the ones we were building the house for, the masons, community leaders, the kids living in the area, and the men who are working in the cane fields. Also, of these connections opened my eyes to how other people live and the importance of a connection to your community local and global. It exemplifies the concept of shared humanity, that we are all in this together, and it is our job to learn about and help all of those around us. I have returned to the community's multiple times and every time it re-centers my perspective to what and who truly matters in life. I could not recommend it enough!
