Selati Horseback Safaris Equine and Wildlife Volunteer Program

About

Selati Horseback Safaris offers a unique experience! We combine conservation on horseback with a wildlife Conservation program. The course is designed to give students an in-depth insight to Wildlife Veterinary Medicine through hands on experience and will also give the golden opportunity to gain valuable knowledge in the South-African Wildlife breeding industry.

Selati Horseback Safari's initiated the program called Riding For Rhinos where students will be involved in monitoring and tracking the Rhino population from horseback, ensuring that game are less stressed and impact the natural biodiversity less.

Combining the programs makes it more comprehensive for all wildlife enthusiasts. On horseback you will experience invigorating dam swims, jewel like sunsets, spectacular wildlife sightings and picturesque mountain scenery on your doorstep. Yes, I recommend this program

Getting up (very) early, but seeing the most beautiful sunrise every day :) Then helping out with the capture of wild antilopes which means physical work, injecting drugs, getting dirty, but lots of fun!
Highlights: elephant safari, horseback riding (during sunrise), perfect weather, to encounter animals I have never seen before - every day!, a very warm welcome and hospitality
Difficulties: communication (Afrikaans vs. German vs. English)

What would you improve about this program?
More communication between students and veterinarian.

Job Title
Co-Founder
Jessica Bezuidenhout is from Gravelotte (Limpopo) in the breathtaking country of South-Africa. A born and bred local, she went to school in one of the nearby towns, about 74km away. She spends most of her time working with wildlife and marketing and managing her Horseback Safaris as well as schooling and training the horses on the spectacular reserve. She is currently 22 years old.

What position do you hold at Selati Horseback Safaris and why do you like working there?

Jessica: I am the co-founder of this volunteer program. I love to teach people about the importance of conservation and open up their minds to how things are done in South-Africa. Love to give volunteers the Ultimate African Experience. I love working here because horses and wildlife are my passion.

How do you think volunteer abroad will change over the next 10 years?

Jessica: Volunteer abroad is amazing. Giving all the opportunity to open up their market to the whole world. Volunteer abroad in 10 years time will only keep on expanding and delivering exceptional service to all clients.

What is your favorite story of a participant's experience in the program?

Jessica: They never know what to expect. From the moment they start it’s a jaw-dropping experience.

What do you find most fulfilling about your interactions with volunteers?

Jessica: Getting to know them and their culture. Forming a bond with each and every one of them. Just seeing their reactions when they get to do something they could never imagine doing.

Do your volunteers require certain qualifications or go through a training process?

Jessica: No qualifications and training process. All that is needed is a passion for wildlife and animals, love for nature and the admiration to learn new things and experience new places.
