Super Experience

I had a great time on working with Silvia and the team. I could only stay a few months but it felt like much longer (in a good way). I felt like I really learned a lot and would not hesitate in recommended it to any traveler looking to teach abroad. The teaching was really fun and I felt like my work made a difference and my opinions counted. The accommodation was great and the food too plus I had time on the weekends to travel around CR. At the end of my time I improved my Spanish speaking. 100%

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Remember to bring an open mind and an open heart. You'll have a great time!

Awesome Program

I volunteered with T&L for 6 months in 2017/18. I had taught a little before in the states but this was my first real 'english teaching' experience. The staff were really helpful in settling me in to the program and adapting to life in Costa Rica.
I stayed with a host family so I got to talk a lot in Spanish, but I already spoke quite good Spanish before I left.
The classes are fun and the kids are really cool and love to learn. It can be busy and hectic att imes in the classroom but if you enjoy working with kids it is a really rewarding program and something I will always remember. It took me a few weeks to get to know all the kids and understand how everything worked, it was a little overwhelming to begin with but after that going to class everyday was the highlight of my day. I left the experience with a passion for teaching and I hope to continue and hopefully become a teacher back home.
The experience of living in Costa Rica and making a difference to the education of children is a unique opprtunity for anyone.

A+ from me!

Fun and sun: Costa Rica

I joined the program in October 2016 and stayed for just over a month and a half. I decided to volunteer in Costa Rica because I always like working with kids and wanted to learn some Spanish. The staff, the teachers and the other volunteers I worked alongside with were really cool people. Even though I am not a teaching student and don't plan on studying or working in education I felt like I was part of the team and contributed something while learning and the experience is a big plus on my resume. I am now studying for a semester in Canada and missing the Costa Rican sunshine. I hope to be back sometime soon for a visit.
Best all! Alex.

What would you improve about this program?
I should have stayed longer!

Teaching and leaning in Costa Rica

Hi! My name is Casper and I'm a early years education student from Germany. I decided to volunteer because I wanted to get some experience teaching before I take my masters. I chose the program based on the past reviews and also the location of the program, in Costa Rica. I stay for two months at T&L, in that time I worked at three different locations, an adult language school, a childrens community project and a public school, I got a lot of experience out of all three and really enjoyed the work. I even got to give a few classes in German and share some of my culture. This program is perfect if you love to teach and want to see Costa Rica and it's people. I don't have any complaints and would recommend it to any potential travellers or volunteers. Great program.

Volunteering in Costa Rica

I had the best time ever in Costa Rica. Don't hesitate. Go!

This was my first time volunteering so I was a little nervous before starting but everyone made me feel at home, the staff, the other volunteers and most of all the kids.

The work was fun and so was hanging out with the other volunteers after class. Mostly we would help out with the kids in class, the staff placed us in roles best suited to our strengths. I got to try a little of everything and I felt like I appreciated by the kids and other teachers. As I volunteer you will help the local teachers with teaching and activities. I also did some tutoring which I liked a lot.

Costa Rica is a stunning country with plenty of things to do and see. There are beautiful beaches, mountains, hot springs waterfalls. It is hard to say what was my favorite. I really can't wait to go and visit again.

I stayed with the other volunteers, the rooms were really comfortable and there was a garden with hammocks and also a kitchen to cook. We had a traditional breakfast every morning and for lunch and dinner we had a choice of different things.

I would really recommend this program to anyone thinking of volunteering!

Alumni Interviews

These are in-depth Q&A sessions with verified alumni.

Why did you choose this program?

I knew I wanted to teach abroad as a volunteer and it was difficult to settle on one organization to go with.

I chose Teach and lLearn because they offered a really good volunteer package and after speaking with them I knew that the program would be a good fit for me.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

The staff were really helpful in the lead up to volunteering. I´d volunteered abroad before so even though things like travel insurance and flight booking were all familiar to me, they gave me a lot of useful information.

It was my first time in Costa Rica so I had a lot of questions but they were all answered so I felt prepared for my trip. When I arrived in Costa Rica I was met by a staff member and driven to the project were I was given a briefing, this (and meeting the other volunteers) really helped me feel settled in quickly.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

If I had one piece of advice to give to someone thinking of volunteering it would be to travel light. I brought a lot of stuff that I didn't need so next time I will save on my flight cost by taking less stuff.

The one thing I'd say to any prospective volunteer is that Costa Rica is a really welcoming and friendly country.

I have volunteered abroad before and without a doubt my time in Costa Rica was the most fun and enjoyable experience. I'm happy that I made the choice to go!

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

The volunteering was split into different shifts, some mornings and some afternoons/evenings. The morning classes were the younger kids and the afternoons were the teenagers and adults.

Most of the work was at a community children's project and also a local school. I started by helping the teachers in the classes but after getting used to everything I got to contribute some of my own ideas and even got to lead some classes.

I also helped with some art projects in the classroom and did some tutoring. It was a fun experience and I also felt like I learned a lot too.

In my free time I would hang out in the gardens or at the pool with the other volunteers, we would usually eat together in the evenings and at the weekends go to the local bar.

We'd usually manage to a trip each weekend too, Costa Rica is a beautiful country and Grecia is a great base to explore from.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it and/or how did your views on the issue change?

I had never taught before this experience, and apart from some babysitting I had little experience working with children. I was worried that the work would be too difficult or the kids might not like me as their teacher.

After the first few classes I felt relaxed and the kids were curious about finding out about me. By the time I left I felt like I'd made a connection to them and their lives.

I loved teaching and my time volunteering in Costa Rica inspired me to a pursue a career in teaching.

After returning home I enrolled in a teaching course and I feel like my time in Costa Rica has given me an advantage as a teacher.
