Why choose Tidelines Institute?

Tidelines Institute is an Alaskan educational nonprofit with a vision for the world. Out of our twin campuses in the heart of the Alaskan wilderness, we prepare diverse groups of young people for lives of civic, environmental, and climate leadership. Tidelines students paddle through glacial fjords, organize divestment movements, study field ecology and Indigenous cultures, fish for wild Alaska salmon, and build connections to community and place. Programs include a 6-month immersive gap year, short courses on specific environmental themes, community workshops, and scientific research - visit our website to find the right one for you!

This program was the most exciting program of my life. I’ve learned and experienced so much because it constantly challenged me. This program is, without a doubt, hard but it’s incredible and is a chance in my life that I’m so so happy I took applying. The staff and environment really care for you and support you when you need help, because they understand that it’ll be challenging. I came into the program as a high school student and the classes both challenged me because of the difficult concepts in the readings we did but also because of how different it was from my previous experiences in class. The small seminar class with 6 students means you know the professor well and they know you do you truly have to be present in class. I think that’s great. Even after the program ended I still keep in touch with my cohort from Alaska and I’m still learning in new ways because of it

Pros
  • Knowledge of native cultures
  • Experiential learning of the outdoors
Cons
  • Not much internet
  • Isolated

Glacier Bay Year 2022 review

Tidelines is not easy but it is so worth it. Tidelines is challenging but it is so fun. To be honest, I did not think I would last all six-months, I thought I would leave early. By the second week, I told everyone that I was leaving. lol. Yet I stayed. I knew that I would not find an experience and a community like this anywhere else. I am so glad I stayed and chose to savor my time in Alaska with an adventurous, caring, and warm community. There is no other experience like this! I would encourage everyone to apply!
