YMCA Camp Elphinstone

Why choose YMCA Camp Elphinstone?

YMCA Camp Elphinstone, part of the YMCA BC community branch, is dedicated to building strong kids, strong families, and strong communities. As a non-denominational camp, we embrace diversity and foster a sense of belonging through our programs.
Located on the Sunshine Coast of BC, just a 40-minute ferry from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver, the camp is a 20-minute walk from the Langdale ferry terminal and a 10-minute drive from Gibsons.
Duties vary depending on the season, with approximately 80% of duties involving direct engagement with young people aged 5–17. Staff lead outdoor activities, facilitate mealtime programs, assist with facility preparation and maintenance, and contribute to a variety of camp operations. Staff are expected to be positive role models, promoting personal growth in participants. Life-saving and first aid certifications are essential, along with a passion for working with children, a strong work ethic, teamwork skills, and a willingness to learn.

Experience

I had a life changing experience at this camp. It is an environment where you are accepted for who you are and where you can feel comfortable being yourself without feeling the need to be ashamed of anything.

At the same time, you learn how to navigate different social interactions. The kind of energy you bring into an environment makes a huge difference, and you definitely need patience, both with yourself and with others, as well as understanding and empathy.

If you are willing to work on yourself, learn, get to know different people, learn from them, and build genuine connections with both colleagues and children, this is an incredible opportunity. Being able to make children happy and build meaningful connections with them is one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.

Especially if you are someone who is naturally interested in people and social interactions, this experience can teach you a lot about yourself. It gives you the opportunity to discover your strengths and weaknesses, understand yourself better, and actively work on your personal development.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
