Do you have to be fluent in Italian?

Definitely not- most of the volunteers spoke basic Italian or learned their first words there. That being said, I went into the program fluent in Italian and I felt I got a lot more out of it and was able to help the kids more.
You definitely don’t need to be fluent although a little helps when out and about. Basic phrases usually go a long way. And all the staff and volunteers help as much as they can too.
