A great research Opportunity

My internship at KAUST was an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on research experience and step into a highly applied and impactful scientific environment. Working within the marine science department, I was directly involved in ongoing research projects, contributing to fieldwork, environmental monitoring, data collection and processing, as well as extensive laboratory analyses.
One of the most valuable aspects of the experience was the exposure to the full research cycle in a research intensive lab (EcoOce lab). The combination of fieldwork and lab work offered a comprehensive view of how marine research is conducted, from project conception to data acquisition and analysis.
KAUST provides great infrastructure and facilities, which significantly enhance the learning experience. The campus environment is well-equipped and designed to support both research and daily life, with access to sports and recreational activities.
In terms of lifestyle, it is worth noting that the social environment differs from Europe, particularly regarding nightlife. However, this is expected in Saudi Arabia, and there are still many opportunities to connect with people on campus and explore the surrounding region.
Overall, I would strongly recommend this internship to anyone looking to develop practical research skills, gain hands-on experience, and expand their academic network. It is an excellent first step into the world of research and academia.

Exciting Personal Experience

KAUST VSRP program was an amazing experience for me in the professional way because I had the opportunity to understand how a real team of engineers work and I could put into practice all my years of formation. It was also a great personal experience as it made me grow as a human being and it made me know people and culture from all over the world expanding my was of thinking and living.

This experience permitted me to do new things that I would have never accomplished if I didn't come here so even if I was away from my home country for 5 months I consider it totally worth it.

A Welcoming Global Community and a Great First Internship

This was my first time traveling, living abroad, and being on my own, which was a huge shift. While I definitely felt some homesickness at first, the community here is so welcoming that it really helps you get through those tougher days. My lab group was great too—super patient and relaxed, which I really appreciated since I was new to research.

The campus itself is very secure, so you don't have to worry about safety, and having the housing and stipend covered meant I could just focus on my work and things I enjoy, like playing tennis. I wouldn't say I’ve found a "life’s calling" yet, but I realized I genuinely enjoy the research process. It was a big step for my personal growth, and I’m glad I had the chance to do it in such a supportive global environment.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I did this all over again, I’d definitely start exploring the campus and joining community events much sooner. It took me a little while to step out of my 'bubble' of lab work, but once I started catching the sunsets at the Island Rec Center and attending things like the Flavors of Nations, it really helped with the homesickness. I realized later on that those social connections and the unique atmosphere of places like The Beacon are just as much a part of the growth experience as the research itself.
Pros
  • Safety and Convenience
  • Global Community
  • Worry-Free Living and Supportive Lab Culture
Cons
  • The "Campus Bubble"
  • Distance from the "Real World"
  • Intense Research Pace

VSRP Experience

My first time doing a research project and my first time travelling abroad on my own. What a life changing experience. My research group at BAYESCOMP has been incredibly welcoming, and I deeply appreciate their patience and guidance, especially as someone new to research. The environment is a closed fenced campus that has everything from supermarkets to clinics, which provide safety and accommodation (within campus) with kitchen make my first time living abroad easy to settle in. And most importantly the opportunity to meet people from all over the world has been truly amazing.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Not ate. But I tried camel milk for the first time :)

A Transformative Research and Cultural Experience at KAUST

My name is Jose Francisco Mar Tapia, and I am a Mechatronics Engineering student from Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico. My experience at KAUST was truly unique due to the combination of high level research, mentorship from world class researchers, and a diverse international community. During my internship, I worked on a research project that challenged me technically and helped me grow as an engineer. Daily life at KAUST was well balanced, allowing me to focus on research while also engaging in cultural, social, and academic activities on campus. One of my strongest impressions was the collaborative and supportive environment, where asking questions and learning from others was always encouraged. My advice to future interns is to be proactive, take initiative in your project, and fully engage with the KAUST community, as both the research and the people make this experience truly exceptional.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
One of the most surprising experiences was driving for seven hours just to visit a single attraction, which turned into an unforgettable adventure and a great way to explore the region beyond campus.
Pros
  • Exposure to world class research facilities and experienced mentors
  • Diverse and international community
  • Strong support system and collaborative environment
Cons
  • Limited activities outside campus
  • High temperatures during certain months
  • Adjusting to a new culture can take some time at the beginning

Unique Experience

I had a nice time at KAUST. I felt incredibly supported from my post doc and learned so much. I have greatly enjoyed the research i have done here and have grown as a scientist. My principal investigator was very helpful in finding me a proper fit given my prior research experience and the labs current research. The facilities for research at KAUST were incredible. It allowed us to perform experiments with minimal constraint. I am very glad I chose KAUST to explore marine biology. The housing facilities were also amazing.

An International Research Experience in a Multicultural Environment

My experience abroad was overall positive, mainly due to the international and multicultural environment. Being surrounded by people from many different countries allowed me to exchange ideas, perspectives, and experiences that went beyond academics. This exposure helped me broaden my worldview and understand how research and education are approached in different cultural contexts.

From an academic standpoint, the experience was solid and structured, and it provided an opportunity to engage with research in an international setting. Daily life on campus was comfortable and efficient, making it easy to focus on work and interactions with others.

I would recommend it particularly to students interested in experiencing research within a diverse, global community.

A time of growth and learning

The KAUST VSRP is one of a kind. I had access to amazing equipment and research facilities. They especially have a great cleanroom. I learnt a lot about the struggle of independent research and grew with my peers. Their mechanical engineering department is mainly focused on combustion and microfluidics, but there are a few professors offering other research. I also had the chance to make friends from all over the world, and for that I will always be grateful. I am so thankful for the great experiences I had here at KAUST.

Great experience

Besides being a great experience to meet new people in my field of research, learn new analytical methods, and learn how to use new equipment, this was also a great opportunity to make friends and improve my English. The food here is good, it's safe, and the apartments are well-equipped (the apartment is shared, but we have a private bedroom and bathroom, in addition to weekly cleaning in the shared area). Plus, there are many recreational activities offered, many of them free, such as the swimming pool and the gym.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
it was camel meat.
Pros
  • It's easy to make friends
  • The campus is very clean
  • It's a very beautiful place, and we have easy access to the beach
Cons
  • It is very hot during the summer

A fully supported research internship at KAUST

My KAUST VSRP internship was an outstanding, genuinely immersive research experience. What makes it unique is how fully supported the program is: housing and essential services are already arranged, so you can focus almost entirely on research from day one instead of spending time on logistics. That structure really boosts productivity and makes the experience feel like real graduate-level research. The scientific environment is excellent, with strong mentorship, access to high-quality facilities, and a campus culture that encourages learning through seminars, collaborations, and international networking. I also appreciated how easy it was to integrate into the community and stay focused on my project. For future participants, I would recommend arriving with clear goals, communicating expectations early with your supervisor, and taking advantage of seminars and discussions across labs. Overall, VSRP is a top-tier program for anyone looking for serious research training abroad.

Pros
  • Fully funded internship program!
  • All recreational resources avaiable at the campus (gym, pool for free)
  • Cutting-edge research
