My experience as a VSRP intern at KAUST has been one of the most rewarding chapters of my academic career. I worked in the GCEco Lab under Dr. Maggie Johnson, where I designed and ran a full experimental project on sea cucumbers and coral reef ecology. The mentorship, scientific rigor, and collaborative atmosphere in the Johnson Lab were exceptional. My lab mates were incredibly supportive — I learned something new every single day, whether in the field, in the tank room, or during data analysis sessions.

Daily life at KAUST was equally memorable. The campus offers a vibrant social environment, world-class athletic facilities, and countless opportunities to get involved — from diving in the Red Sea to hitting the gym, joining sports groups, or simply enjoying time with friends. The accommodation was comfortable and modern, and the campus itself feels like a small, international city with everything you need.

One of the highlights of my internship was the chance to explore Saudi Arabia and the region. KAUST is uniquely positioned for weekend trips, cultural experiences, and outdoor adventures. I was able to travel, dive, hike, and discover places I never imagined I’d see during a research internship.

The research facilities at KAUST are truly state-of-the-art. Having access to advanced labs, tank systems, field sites, and technical support made it possible to carry out ambitious experiments that wouldn’t be feasible in many other places.

Practical Advice for Future Interns:
Be proactive about connecting with your lab before arrival — it helps you hit the ground running. Make the most of the social and athletic opportunities on campus, explore the incredible landscapes around the Kingdom, and don’t hesitate to dive deep into the research environment. KAUST offers a rare blend of scientific excellence, community, and adventure, and you will get out of it what you put in.

Overall, my VSRP experience broadened my scientific skills, expanded my network, and gave me lasting memories — both in the lab and beyond. I would recommend it wholeheartedly to any student eager to combine world-class research with a once-in-a-lifetime cultural and personal experience.

My internship at KAUST was truly life-changing. I had the opportunity to work closely with leading researchers in cutting-edge research. The hands-on experience I gained in the lab allowed me to apply concepts from my studies in a real-world research setting. My internship at KAUST has been a great experience, both academically and personally. Working in Professor Rosado’s lab gave me the chance to explore microbial biotechnology using advanced computational tools, while collaborating with people from all over the world. The facilities and resources here make it easy to focus on research, and the multicultural environment creates a unique sense of community. Life on campus is very comfortable, with everything from housing to recreation well organized. My advice to future interns would be to make the most of the opportunities both inside and outside the lab and to explore Saudi Arabia as much as they can.

It was a hard decision to come here - four months away from everything I know, first time living alone with a full-time job, in a different language community, in another climate. But it was a good decision - I made many friends from all over the world, got to know a new culture, learned a lot in my field as well as soft skills - time management, working alone on my own project. Besides work, there is a lot to do: there are a lot of restaurants, two sport centres, two beaches, and buses to Jeddah every day and to Makkah and Medina every week!

My after work life has never been this fun and diverse. This is due to the many sports club and the Red Sea with its natural beauty being right there. From November 1st, 2024, to April 29th, 2025, I had the opportunity to conduct a research internship at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), where I worked in one of the leading laboratories in the field of membrane science. My research focused on pervaporative water desalination, specifically involving the fabrication of membranes via interfacial polymerization.

During the internship, I explored various fabrication methods to optimize membrane performance for desalination applications. This hands-on experience taught me not only advanced laboratory techniques but also the importance of critical thinking and patience, as some membranes yielded successful results while others did not. These outcomes pushed me to engage more deeply in literature review and analytical evaluation, enhancing my understanding of membrane materials and their behavior under different fabrication conditions.

Overall, this experience was extremely valuable for my academic and professional growth. Working in a top-tier research environment strengthened my passion for membrane technology and will significantly contribute to my future PhD applications and research trajectory.

My internship at KAUST was a truly rewarding experience. I had the opportunity to work closely with a highly reputable professor in his field and collaborate on projects with outstanding students who had already achieved significant success, including publications in respected conferences and journals. Beyond the academic aspect, the program organizes various trips that are a fantastic way to meet fellow interns, enjoy new experiences, and explore the local culture, which is both rich and fascinating. The campus itself is exceptional, offering excellent sports facilities for football, volleyball, tennis, a well-equipped gym, etc. All of these facilities are completely free to use. Accommodation is very comfortable, with each participant provided a private room equipped with everything needed. Additionally, the scholarship provides enough financial support to explore new activities, travel, and even save by the end of your stay. I highly recommend this program to anyone seeking both academic growth and a unique cultural experience.

When first I arrived here, I thought I would feel completely alone because I didn't know anything. I couldn't have been more wrong. This time has been so special for me. I am enjoying each day in the lab and having fun with my friends at the same time. I am learning a new language (some words) hahaha, trying new food, visiting new places and meeting new people. I had the incredible opportunity to complete an internship at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), and it was one of the most enriching and inspiring experiences of my academic journey.

I joined the Prof Dr Rueping group under the supervision of Dr Renn, where I worked on the development of nanobody-based LFA for detecting Lyme disease. Regarding research experience, KAUST have top laboratories and facilities to which every student has access. There is a large amount of equipment that you can be trained to use on your own. And you don't have to worry about anything else because is already covered: housing, transportation, and allowance.
