Galway

Galway is a beautiful city with fantastic people. I loved getting lost down the winding, colorful streets. There was always something fun to do or new to discover. NUIG was easy to get to from our apartment, and I was happy with the course selection.

The culture shock was minimal since English was the spoken language, but it was fun to compare American and Irish slang with new Irish friends.

ISA made me feel comfortable navigating a new city. The directors showed us around and were always helpful.

CHOOSE SALAMANCA AND BE AMAZED

I chose a summer program lasting 6 weeks focusing on intensive Spanish language comprehension. It was my first time abroad but I was so ready. I studied at the University of Salamanca (la Universidad de Salamanca).

Even going into the country knowing only about 50% of the language, being with ISA and with my fellow students made me feel SO at ease and relaxed I sometimes forgot I was there to go to school! Everything from the food, the fiestas, the nightlife, the parties, the landscapes, the architecture, the history, the people, the dancing, the laughter, the music - EVERYTHING - was absolutely intoxicating.

We began our journey in Madrid where I first met my classmates. Together, we bonded as early as Day 1 and to this day I am elated to be able to call those people my lifelong friends. From Madrid we traveled to Toledo, San Lorenzo, and finally arrived in Salamanca a week after arriving in Spain. What I loved most about the overall organization of excursions, was that we were all getting to know each other and becoming friends BEFORE the stress of school started, it made us all much closer before we even got to Salamanca - it was beautiful to be able to "click" with a group of strangers who are all bound together for the same purpose and goals.

After a few weeks in Salamanca, we traveled around the country visiting Segovia, Santander, Santilliana del Mar and Castillos. I even went to Lisbon, Portugal through one of the organized optional trips ISA effortlessly helps set up for you! You simply walk into their office, tell them where you wanna go, and by the time you leave you've got the most concrete and solid travel plan better than any Travel Agent could provide for you!

I cannot speak more highly about my time in Spain. ISA helped me from my first to last day, and every step along the way. The ISA Spain advisers (as well as the Austin, TX correspondences back home) helped me explore not only the world around me - but myself as well. I owe my future career plans to ISA, because they helped my discover my inner wanderlust, and I am just getting started!

What would you improve about this program?
A more in depth look at host families living situations. I myself has a roommate issue and was moved within my first weekend in Spain. BUT, it has nothing to do with my Spanish host mother. But I do know of some of my classmates who felt a little bettered and beaten down (verbally) by the unintentional abrasive, outward attitude of the Spaniards.

Bottom line, there are some families that should not be taking students in if they are too easily overwhelmed. However, I myself can say both famlilies I stayed with her flawless!

ISA in Sevilla - Perfection!

Sevilla is an incredible city, filled with so much culture and history. ISA did a great job organizing the program so that we got to experience the history in unique ways - like kayaking down the river that Columbus and other famous explorers sailed down during Spain's Golden Age. In addition, the classes I took at the University were totally manageable and ISA professors understood that we were there to learn outside of the classroom too, so we had lots of free time to travel and really experience the culture in which we lived. The excursions ISA organized were also great as they took us to many other wonderful cities in the region, especially some where we might not have gone on our own - like Jerez, which is famous for its production of Spanish sherry. All in all, ISA in Sevilla was a great program and a perfect fit. I definitely made more than a lifetime of memories while abroad and I cannot wait until I have the opportunity to go abroad again!

What would you improve about this program?
I would change the length of time of the program as 6 weeks just is not enough time to see and do everything. I think 9 or 12 weeks would have been ideal!

Greatest experience of my life

Going to New Zealand was, by far, one of the best choice that I have ever made. I had so many eye-opening experiences over the course of 5 month that could not be rivaled. I jumped out of planes and off bridges, hiked mountains and swam in rivers, danced in nightclubs and went to museums. I made some of the best friends that I could ever ask for and traveled one of the greatest countries in the world.

Deciding to us the Education Abroad Network is the second best choice I made. They made the process so easy and their staff was there whenever you needed them, even throughout our time there. They organized several events, like a pre-semester trip to Fiji and tickets to rugby games, that helped to enhance my overall experience and I couldn't be more thankful for them through out the entire process.

If you're thinking about heading to this part of the world, I would 100% recommend this program, it will change your life.

What would you improve about this program?
The only thing I would change is the process of deciding on housing. A more descriptive explanation of the living accommodation and where they are located in relation to the school and the city.

My Study Abroad Experience

I have to start off by saying that my study abroad trip to Barcelona, Spain was simply life changing and incredible! I left everything that I was used to and stepped into a world of new ways, beliefs and traditions. Too me, it was the little things that mattered the most; the way Catalans embraced each other or the way people walked around and appreciated the beautiful nature that Barcelona has to offer! Every day after class I would lay out on the beach and just soak up the sun right in front of the Mediterranean Sea. My home stay mother was so nice to us and the smell of her cooking made me feel so warm inside. Even though I was so out of touch with the United States for this short amount of time, I felt like I was at home exactly where I was. Hiking to the very top of the Montserrat mountain was completely peaceful and breathtaking. I closed my eyes and knew that this was exactly where I was supposed to be. My program was the best and their support made me feel so comfortable with everything that I did. I came back to the United States pumped up to do even more with my life and of course travel again internationally! Being a Global Ambassador at Hampton University is so awesome because I get to share my experience and help other's make their dreams of studying abroad a reality.

What would you improve about this program?
The only thing that I would change is maybe the program should have a meet and greet with all of the students before classes started.

Favorite City in the World!

I decided to study abroad in Granada by the recommendation of a friend who had gone with ISA two years ago. It was a spur of the moment decision for me, but it was the best choice I have made in college, bar none. As a homebody, I never pictured myself enjoying an abroad experience, but my time in Granada completely flipped my world. I spoke no Spanish going into the program, but the on-site staff, other students with ISA, and the incredibly friendly locals were beyond supportive and happy to help as I was learning the language.
Of all the cities that I visited in Spain (including fan-favorite Madrid), Granada proved to be the ultimate destination in my opinion. The city is large enough to provide endless attractions and entertainment, while maintaining a very warm, welcoming environment rarely found in areas with such large populations. Never once did I feel overwhelmed by the locals, the size of the city, or the tourist population. Granada provided an authentic Spanish experience, free from obnoxious tourist attractions, where I could soak up the culture and lifestyle of the average citizen. The city was remarkably clean and had the classic Spanish essence of cobblestone streets and breathtaking architecture. At nights, the streets were lit in a very romantic way that provided just enough light to see the plants hanging from endless rows of balconies leading to fountain upon fountain within plaza squares. Pictures of the cityscape will be etched in my mind forever. Atop the city, overlooking the land, is the historic Alhambra. As Spain's last moorish stronghold, the Alhambra and surrounding borough provide a glimpse into history in a pleasantly aesthetic way. This palace can be seen from nearly all locations throughout the city, and a trip to the top results in one of the most phenomenal views in the world.
City life is tastefully active, with the majority of transportation being your own two feet. ISA does a fantastic job ensuring that your host home is within manageable distance from your classes, so I was never stressed over time or effort in my commute. Though it can be tiring, walking facilitates familiarity with the city and opportunity to enjoy the local scene. After classes, my schedule was wide open, and the pedestrian friendly city always had something new for me to see. Granada is famous for free tapas (essentially appetizers) when you buy a drink. As a self proclaimed foodie, these enhanced each day as they gave me an opportunity to literally taste the culture. Granada is also home to vast expanses of locally owned shops, restaurants, and other businesses that make the city unique from any other. Personally, my favorite shop was a heladería (ice cream shop) near my house where I befriended the owner to the point that he knew my order and cut me deals on his decadent creations.
ISA also provides opportunities to venture outside of the host city for no additional cost with the planned excursions. My excursions were to Madrid, Sevilla, and Toledo. Each trip was well coordinated, making travel a simple treat for all of the students. We always stayed in nice hotels in the center of the cities so that navigation was easy and convenient, and the staff was more than knowledgeable on the attractions. Granada's close proximity to the coast also allowed for multiple weekend trips to Spain's painfully beautiful beaches, where some of my best memories were made. Though I did not have time to go, the city is also very near Morocco and the mountains which are both great destinations that fellow ISAers highly recommended.
One of the most memorable parts of the ISA experience is the opportunity to live with a host family. I was placed in a home with a middle aged married couple who showed nothing but the utmost affection for me and my two roommates. My host mom spent a great deal of time cooking every meal with care, and saw to it that all of our needs were met (laundry, food, travel coordination, etc.). Both parents were a terrific resource, as they showed us around the city, introduced us to family and friends, and suggested their favorite activities in Granada. The house itself was extremely close to my classes (8-9 minute walk) and was kept clean throughout the duration of my trip. My host family encouraged my Spanish speaking and I accredit most of my current abilities to the time I spent with them. Now, a year since my program, I still keep in contact with them.
As for relationships, the most enjoyable and memorable part of my experience in Granada, without a doubt, were the friends that I made. I was apprehensive about traveling abroad on my own, but the friendliness and outgoingness of all my companions made friendships a breeze. I made two friends in particular with whom I spent every waking moment, and it still was not enough. I am still in constant contact with both of them and am currently planning an opportunity to see one of them (back in Europe.. woo!) this summer. As an alumni of study abroad, I now realize that no matter where you choose to go, the best part of your experience will be the relationships that you build while you are there. That being said, Granada is an awesome place to do that and I can't wait for the opportunity to return!

What would you improve about this program?
More options during the excursions would have been nice.

Amazing Experience

Choosing to study at the University of Newcastle and use TEAN as a provider was an amazing fit for me. I really immersed myself in the Newcastle lifestyle, made life long friends and unforgettable memories. Living at the Samdon Street housing was a great experience because I got to live with a bunch of Australians and learn about their culture first hand. It made it really easy to get involved because there were always people around and things to do. The uni was also a short train or bus ride away and I liked attending a campus because my home college is very city based.

What would you improve about this program?
Australia in general is an expensive place, I wish I was more prepared on where my budget would go and travel expenses.

University of Roehampton

This school was great! Having been attending one a smaller, more challenging school at home, I found this school to be very easy going and laid back. The party scene was great and the area was just as good! Just a train ride away from the center of everything!

My time in Sevilla literally changed my life. From the courses, to the culture, to the ISA staff, to my host family, and the excursions...I'm a better person for participating on this program. Studying abroad ignited my passion for travel and this year I will hit my 26th country!

Best experience of my entire existence

My time in China was enriching to my soul, and food to my hunger for adventure. I was able to diverge myself into the local culture, along with flying off to neighboring countries to explore and compare different Asian cultures amongst one another, while attending classes. Shanghai is a beautiful province with a population of 23 million people. Its undergone enormous changes this past few decades, but its still managed to hold onto its cultural identity. The location and scope of the city is modern enough to be comfortable, but different in a sense that your in China! I would do it all over again with no hesitation.
