Favorite program in a wonderful city

Hi, I am Zoe, I am a graduate from the University South Florida. I chose this internship because I wanted to explore a new city and shadow doctors. The program directors here have been amazing. They would accommodate our every need.

My favorite thing was that I’ve been able to see the actual surgeries and stand in the rooms.

Athens is absolutely beautiful and I think everyone should visit Athens at least once.

The cultural experiences, the food , and the welcoming atmosphere made this internship even more memorable!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
One of the most unfamiliar things I tried was grilled octopus. I had never eaten it before coming to Greece, and I was a little unsure ta first because of the texture and the idea of it. But it turned out to be surprisingly delicious , tender and smoky. It was on of the dishes that made me realize how fresh and flavorful Greek food can be. I'm really glad I stepped out of my comfort zone with that one.
Pros
  • Very supportive and friendly program coordinators
  • Unique opportunity to observe real medical procedures up close
  • Beautiful city with rich culture and great food
Cons
  • Honestly, I don't really have any complaints.

A unique opportunity for knowledge and socialization

Hi, I am Filomila Mouzouraki, I live here in Greece. I chose this program as an aspiring doctor. It gave me the opportunity to visit different specialties and give me a sense of what I want to do with the rest of my life. I also chose this program because it gave me the opportunity to meet new people and exchange information, experiences and generally just laugh with people from all over the world- because that’s really exciting for me.

As far as the program is concerned, I fell in love with surgery and the OR, because it is an opportunity I don’t think I could have anywhere else.

The coordinators were so nice. I would totally recommend- five out of five stars. They are easy to communicate with and they would give you the advice and the help you need, just one text away. So, it’s cool. And, as a Greek, I will say that Athens is cool as well.

What was your funniest moment?
One of the funniest moments was when a group of us tried to explain our local slang to each other during a lunch break. Everyone came from different countries , so every expression sounded strange or hilarious to someone. We were laughing so hard that even the doctors nearby were smiling. It was one of those simple moments that made the whole experience feel warm and unforgettable.
Pros
  • Great exposure to different medical secialties
  • Friendly and supportive coordinators
  • Opportunity to meet and connect with people from many countries
Cons
  • I don't have anything else to contribute

Gained experience from a very organized program

Hi, I am Ingrid, I am from North Carolina. I go to school in California and I chose to go on a dental internship because I wanted to gain experience, especially in Greece and also get to explore the dental industry in more detail.

I’ve had a great experience. I got to see all the different specialties, shadow a lot of procedures and the dentists have all been really nice and welcoming and would answer a lot of questions.

Exploring Athens has also been really great. It’s a great city so I definitely would choose to come here again if I had the option.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing was how welcoming and open the dentist was. I didn't expect him to involve me so much in real procedures and take time to explain everything so clearly-it really made the experience unforgettable!
Pros
  • Very welcoming and supportive dentist
  • Hands-on learning experience during real procedures
  • Great opportunity to explore Athens and its culture
Cons
  • Nothing negative to mention

A dream come true

Hi, I am Sarvesh Rajkumar, I am nineteen years old, and I am pursuing my undergraduate degree in computer science engineering in the National Institute of Technology Trichy, in India.

It has always been my dream to pursue a career in robotics. As a kid I’ve always chased that. So now, since I’m in college, I have chosen this internship, as I stumbled across this. So, my first step towards robotics was getting my own drone. As I came across engineering drones, I was really interested in this program. That’s’ why I’m here- I really like doing it.

So, my first task was building a drone. As I had three printed parts of the drone and they helped me make more of it. The first thing to do was to assemble the drone, gather all the electronics. Make all the connections. We have done the sorting of the wires. We had tried then to calibrate the software behind the flight controller. The idea was an auto pilot and we had to calibrate all the sensors, the motors and to check on any safety failures since there are many parameters for that. After that we had to connect the controller so that it can connect through Wi-Fi, using a machine planner. As you can see, this is an assembled drone, his here is the flight controller.

Before I had to come here, I’ve had a few issues with my visa as well. That was the first time that I would have to be alone in Greece, but Cerca Abroad has helped me throughout it. They have dealt with any issues. The admin was really helpful and my mentor here who’s been helping us has been really supportive and friendly and he seems to be just one of us but he has so much experience and many things to teach us. Once here, it’s been really good so far and I really enjoy it.

Since my first time in Greece, I’ve been across countries in Europe but Greece was my first time. I do stay in Thessaloniki. It’s really beautiful. I got to use the buses and the transport system. They are convenient. There are stores that are 24/7. It’s really nice and safe to walk around here. There are many different archaeological Museums, the beaches… it’s really great down here.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing I experienced was seeing the drone I built actually take off for the first time. I had spent days assembling all the parts , connecting the circuits , and calibrating the sensors , but when it finally lifted off the ground , it felt almost unreal
Pros
  • Watching something I created with my own hands fly smoothly was both exciting and humbling
  • It made me realise how powerful and precise engineering can be
  • Thessaloniki is a wonderful city
Cons
  • Nothing

An internship that gave me great opportunities

Hi, my name is Jackson Deneka and I’m from Tennessee in the US, and I also attend University at Tennessee and I am doing this internship a the Metropolitan Hospital and I’ve really enjoyed my time. It’s given me great opportunities to witness different specialties including surgeries and clinical practice. It’s given me a great opportunity to really decide which health career I want to pursue as a profession.

I chose Athens as a chance to travel abroad, get to meet new people and have a great experience to see what different cultures are like. In terms of medical practices, this internship has given us a lot of opportunity, go out on the weekends, see Athens and enjoy all of the rich history that Athens has to provide. This internship has done a great job of helping me mix balance both between getting shadowing experience and also getting a rich cultural experience. So, I would recommend this to anyone that’s interested in this type of opportunity.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing for me was seeing how different medical practices were in Greece compared to the U.S, especially observing surgeries and clinical work. I was also surprised by how well I could balance this experience with exploring Athens and discovering its rich culture.
Pros
  • Exposure to different medical practices and specialties
  • Great cultural experience by exploring Athens and its rich history
  • Balance between professional shadowing and personal growth abroad
Cons
  • N/A

Excellent time in Greece with a lot of fun

My name is Elliot and I am from Oxford. I chose this internship program on Olive tree farming as I wanted to learn more about olive trees and general farming in Greece.

I already know how to farm on a large scale in the UK, but I wanted to see how it’s done on a small scale on many different plots of land in Greece. I have always enjoyed eating olives as they are very healthy and I have enjoyed using all the products associated with olives, such as oil and soap.

During this internship, I learnt to retain olive tree protection and to achieve maximum olive growth. How to use all the machinery associated with olive tree farming, such as trimmers, chainsaws, extractors and scooters, to have access to all the olive tree locations.

The coordination from Cerca Abroad was excellent. Dimitri was a very good boss. He taught me everything he was doing in a kind manner that was not rushed and easy to understand. He told me there was no mistake for me during this and I was very flattered.

The overall experience of Crete was fun and enjoyable. I learnt a great deal about olive tree farming and all the machinery used to grow and harvest them. I have enjoyed my time here so much that I am buying an apartment here to use as a holiday home and to come when the harvest season is on, during September and December. Thank you.

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment was when I tried to ride one of the small scooters we used to reach different olive tree locations. I was so focused on looking professional that I completely forgot to release the handbrake , so the scooter wouldn't move at all . Everyone was laughing while I kept insisting that something must be wrong with the engine.
Pros
  • Hands-on experience with olive tree farming and use of specialized machinery
  • Supportive coordination and clear guidance from Dimitri and the program team
  • Fun cultural experience in Crete with opportunities to enjoy local life and products
Cons
  • Nothing

A really great practice

Hi, my name is Anna Passas, I am a nursing student at the Northeastern University. I’m here, in Greece, for the medical internship. I chose Greece partly to practice my Greek and also to working at a hospital in Boston I wanted to compare to how it’s here in Athens. It’s been really great having time to explore and see Athens. See the cultural differences, the food, and also my program was very accommodating. I told them I was interested in cardiology, so they made an effort to show me everything related to cardiology in the hospital. So it’s been awesome, really great!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
One of the most surprising things I experienced was how personalized the hospital training was. I didn't expect them to tailor my internship to my interest in cardiology-it made the whole experience feel so much more meaningful.
Pros
  • Highly knowledgeable physicians and deeply enriching clinical exposure
  • Exploring Historic Athens
  • A wide variety of delicious local food
Cons
  • Nothing to say

My passion for innovation is fulfilled

Hi, my name is Gabriel, I am nineteen years old, I am an undergraduate currently, and I’m going to study at the University of Newcastle in September. I’m going to be studying mechanical engineering.

I chose this engineering internship on the basis of my passion for innovation, design, and problem-solving, and this internship portrayed whatever met those needs. I was able to build a drone; I fulfilled what I went to study. So the first task I was handed was building a drone. I followed up on the previous interns’ task, where they had to build the electronics for the drone, as well as design the drone. I, then, had to follow on and build the rest of the drone using a 3d printer. I designed the rest of the parts. Made sure they would be stable and able to fly. A few other tasks I was handed were to design and build some, which I sketched out, and to see how to fundamentally sketch in mechanical engineering. I was also towards the basics of some of the tools used in mechanical engineering. Which I think will be very handy for my engineering degree.

My internship was hosted by Cerca Abroad. During my first week, my coordinator was ill, so I thought that things would go slowly. However, there was a delay during the second week, and it turned out more smoothly. In the second week, I learnt the most and I was able to complete the project for my drone, which made me feel that in the second week I made the most out of my internship. So, yes, it was good.

This is my first time in Thessaloniki, as it is my first time alone. I was able to mature and find my next step in maturity. I was also able to help with? which is about half an hour from the center. I was able to sightsee and see some of the amazing beaches they have to offer. We also have the chance to view some of the architecture in Thessaloniki. I was also able to go shopping and visit some of the food sites, where I was able to taste some of the Greek cuisine, including tzatziki, etc., which I thoroughly enjoyed.

What was your funniest moment?
It might not sound hilarious, but when I had my first gyros in Greece, I was so happy I couldn't stop smiling-my friends still laugh about how excited I was.
Pros
  • Opportunity to mature through the internship experience
  • Excellent culinary culture
  • Learning the fundamentals of mechanical engineering
Cons
  • I have no further comments
