Amazing fun and learnt alot

I had such a great time on my trip to Honduas. As my second operation wallacea trip it was fantastic. I did my divemaster training while I was over there and the way it was organised was great we all got given responsibility and were kept busy the whole time. Aswell as learning to become divemasters we were also able to help out on science dives.
Staff were so lovely and Utila is a very fun place!

South Africa 2016

I travelled with my school to South Africa in July and it was probably the best experience of my life. The first week in Balule was incredible- we saw a leopard cross the front of camp whilst eating dinner, and my personal highlight was the night spent in bush camp hearing lions roar close by. The next week in Sodwana Bay was amazing too. On our last dive, our instructor thought he could hear dolphins but we couldn't see any. When we resurfaced, the skipper told us we had been swimming below a whale! It had been right above us on the buoy line and we were completely oblivious. It was an unforgettable 2 weeks.

South Africa

I had never been to an African country before, so had no idea what to expect. The South Africa Expedition was absolutely incredible, I have never enjoyed my experience in a new country as much as I did in South Africa. Waking up, jumping on the back of a 'bakkie' to chase down lions at 6:00am is a memory I'll never forget. I almost don't want to go back to South Africa because i know I'll never live such a great 2 weeks there again. Truly amazing!

A Month In SA Wasn't Even Enough!

I am an avid fan of travelling and I grew up in Europe. But of everything I've seen and everywhere I've travelled so far, nothing compares to South Africa. The trek to get there was the longest I've ever been on, but to spend a month in the SA bush and then a week on the coast learning to scuba dive was the most immersive and culturally exciting trip I've ever taken! I'd recommend visiting 100 times!

The Real Jungle Experience

The first time I heard about OpWall was when I was sitting in a lecture, NOT being distracted by facebook at all. We were called to attention by a young girl, who told us about these cool trips we could go on. I thought "Hey, I wanna go do weird stuff. You only live once." I didn't know that at that moment, I had already made my decision. I wanted to go on an adventure, and that's exactly what I did.

After I had it all finalised, paid (because anything worth doing has to be expensive, sigh), and got my gigantic rucksack packed, I lugged my bag into the airport. I remember thinking I was going to die falling over because of that thing.

Never the less I did not die. In fact, I had the time of my life. I got to the research centre after hours on the bumpy road that had potholes big enough to wallow cars (I'm serious, I saw it), and met the funniest and nicest group of people there. We were trained to do cool stuff, like which animals/plants were poisonous, how to collect certain specimens, etc. But the best part, which we had been oblivious of at the time, were the plumbing and beds. Yes, after that point we slept in glorious hammocks and pooped in boxes. It was actually surprisingly easy to get used to.

Once we got into the field, we got down and dirty, collecting samples and data. My highlight was the bat research. We would go out at sunset around 5:30 and end our rounds at about 1:30am. It was so interesting trekking out to the mist nets in the dark, hearing the nightlife come alive as the sun set, seeing the bug life change. The nights where we caught just as much, if not more, odd bugs and snakes than bats, were the nights were my sense of adventure was sated.

Each night we would all squish onto little benches to eat, and I would feel so connected to these people I had only known for a few short weeks. We had come together from around the world and yet were so similar. We ate together, made our hammocks around each other to feel safe, bathed together in the river, rubbed suntan lotion on each other, helped each other out of water and mud, and most importantly checked each other for parasites. You make lasting bonds with people who trust you enough to check their body for ticks and such.

Needless to say, we got very close, and I still keep in contact with them, even across seas. I remember the ride back to civilization, singing and chattering excitedly. We were excited to see our families, but when I got into the taxi and saw everyone standing there, the people I had laughed with, slept beside, relied on, trusted, I didn't want to leave. I'm willing to admit that I cried, and totally hid it from the others. I still miss it.

I am very happy that I went on this trip. I now how hard the work is, and that I would like to do research in the future. I wan to protect areas like this one, which could make those 4 weeks of my life so unbelievably unforgettable.

If anyone still wants to go on a great adventure like this after my rant, I have two words for you: bring SOCKS. And I don't mean the 4 or so they advise on the form. Bring as many as will fit in your bag. In fact, forget everything else, just bring socks. Fill your bag with them, tie them to it, wear them as jewellery, tie them around your head like a bandana. Just BRING SOCKS. But seriously, there is nothing better than putting your sore feet in a pair of nice clean socks. Nothing dries in Guyana, so dry, clean, socks became money. Also, a good tip would be to put a complete set of clean clothes in a ziplock for the plane; can't be stinky when you see your folks.

I hope my story helps you guys to know more about this trip from a research assistant's perspective . It was hard work, and it didn't always go smoothly, in fact a lot of the time it didn't, but we were always positive. If you are too, then you will have the time of your life, I know I did.

What would you improve about this program?
I would recommend that there be more vehicles to transport us out of, and back to the city, we had quite a few break downs and had no choice but to painfully squish into the remaining ones. We did have a blast with it though. I heard from others that had gone before that they used to fly, but pay extra. It would be interesting to have that option again.

not great

Staff were fairly unsupportive and unfriendly, some were lovely but others treated us like we were school children, which wasn't what I had expected! We were not allowed days off if we were exhausted. Sleeping arrangements were not what was listed, as they were supposed to be 2 people sharing a 3 person tent, but we in fact shared 2 person tents, which e had to cram our 2 huge bags into as well. I wasn't expecting fantastic accommodation, I was prepared for a month in a tent, but not to be in such a tiny one with large holes in so we were regularly disturbed by mice in our tent in the night. It was difficult to sleep which generally impacted on the entire trip. Im not entirely sure what our money paid for. I loved the wildlife aspects of the trip, and some of the malagasy people were lovely. But support from staff was poor and I would not recommend this trip to anybody. Definitely go to Madagascar, it was a fantastic beautiful country, but do not go with opwall. (I have since heard that some of their other trips were wo derful, particularly peru, and as this was the second year Madagascar had been running it may have improved. But for the cost dont risk it!!!)

Expedition 2013

Fantastic experience of real african bush. Always felt safe and taken care of and made some fantastic friends. Would recommend to anyone who loves african wildlife and conservation. Favourite experience was waking up for the sunrise in camp and being less than 100 metres away from a family of hippos.

The most breathtaking experience

My time in South Africa was the most amazing experience for me. Meeting new people and seeing the most breathtaking views was the highlight of the trip. The staff look after you and help whenever you need it, and they are fun as well. I would most certainly recommend this trip to everyone as South Africa is the most beautiful place. My only problem was that two weeks was not enough. I enjoyed every second of the trip!!

An Unforgettable Experience

I learned more during this expedition than I ever thought I would. The combination of lectures and bush excursions makes for a fantastic learning experience. It opened up my eyes to brand new perspectives that i had never thought of before. There is a great balance of work and play, though you will be exhausted every day you're there.. so much gets packed in every day! I wouldn't trade my experience for the world.
