Volunteering at HCA

We spent 2 months during September and October 2025. The Beach House was very quiet and with not much to do in the town you do need to slow down and enjoy the peace. The people are friendly and the town feels safe. There are rules to the house which are quite restrictive but are there for safety and to protect the reputation so be prepared to come home early!

If speak Spanish you will find the classes easier. We do not speak fluently and found that we were a little isolated at first. The children are adorable and love creative lively lessons. There us a lot to do in the local area. We went away most weekends. If you are older like us it can be difficult to connect with the Interns who are all early 20s. I think it suits younger people who can speak some Spanish.

Pros
  • Close to beautiful locations
  • Swimming in the sea
Cons
  • Sand fleas
  • Restrictions

A relaxed experience in Honduras

As a manager volunteer, I am experiencing all of there is here : working with kids, in the community, with the adults and the support of an amazing staff.

The kids are amazing and lively, the program for teaching here is good and are giving me teaching skills I didn't know about.

Besides, I have also been fortunate to work with two other teachers here that have helped me raised my skills up.

I highly recommend you join their program, as you will learn so many things that you will be able to value later on in life, while experiencing something amazing on the way !

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
If you want to be away and experience life as a local, as well as teach kids and learn Spanish, I would highly recommend you choose HCA. All of this while leaving in a Beach House, where the sound of the ocean will accompany you, when it's not Latin music and laughter's !
Pros
  • Developed my teaching Skills
  • Developed my Manager and Fundraising skills
  • Developed my Spanish
Cons
  • Quiet life in a village (if you don't like it, don't choose this program)
  • The heat outside the rainy season

Honduras Child Alliance

I first joined this organization in 2023 for six months, and the experience touched me so deeply that I came back in 2025 for a full year. Teaching English to the children in the community here in Honduras is so much more than just volunteering — it’s about sharing smiles, learning from each other, and feeling part of something real.

The kids are curious, eager to learn, and full of energy. Every day brings new moments of connection and joy. The local team is incredibly supportive and welcoming, always there to help and make you feel at home.

If you’re looking for a meaningful, genuine volunteering experience that will stay with you long after you leave, this is the place!

Perfect Experience

Good morning, I would like to say a few words about how effectively this association is giving rise to something great in Polvenir, a small town on the Honduran coast. having experienced it first hand I can say that it is helping the education of many children a lot and has become a reference center for many adults in the area, known by all as a safe and important place for the community.

The feeling of freedom in front of the peace of unspoiled nature, and the love found in experiencing the small things that make this life rich in meaning. The smile of a child, the light that caresses your face, the scent of a season that never ends, the backdrop of a sea that embraces the sun in a purple dip that touches what the legends interpret as sublime. Dear friend, I wish you were here with me to share this joy!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Villa pico Bonito, a very great place in to the jungle
Pros
  • Family team
  • Great place to live
  • People of the community

10/10 experience

My experience volunteering with Honduras Child Alliance has been everything I hoped it would be and more. The work is incredibly fulfilling, educational, and expansive. I have gained a widened perspective of the world by working with a culture so different from mine all while having a really great time. The program is organized and community focused and the workload is fair. It is also really fun to work with other volunteers from all over the world. Additionally, my Spanish has improved so much! I was a bit nervous at first about things like safety and cost of living and I have been so pleasantly surprised at how accessible it is in both of these areas. I am so glad I made the decision to volunteer my time at HCA and be a part of something bigger than myself. This is an experience I will always remember.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
My most nerve racking moment was when we went river rafting. I was super nervous at first to go on the class 4 rapids. It ended up being one of the most fun experiences!
Pros
  • well rounded
  • community focused
  • international experience
Cons
  • bug bites

Four amazing months of teaching and language emersion!

I just finished four amazing months with HCA in El Porvenir. I can't recommend this organization enough to people looking to gain experience working in a country that isn't known to tourists. The impact the organization is able to have on the community is unbelievable you can never walk down the street without saying hi to at least five people you know. One of my most treasured memories was seeing how students came out of their shell by the time I left I had a young student singing the ABC's to me, so excited that he had learned some English. I miss Honduras dearly but know I will be back soon to reunite with my amazing students and friends I made.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
My most nerve-racking moment had to be my first time in class. I spoke only some Spanish and had students asking me questions in rapid fire. I quickly overcame this by the second or third week and was speaking in much confidence with my students.
Pros
  • The community member
  • Baleadas
  • The beach
Cons
  • The heat
  • Cockroaches
  • Power outages

Hola!

Hello! My name is Eleonore, and I was a volunteer in HCA during 3 months at the end of 2023. Now I am back in France, but I can’t stop thinking about my experience in Honduras!

To be short, I will just talk about one little thing to convince you to volunteer with this organization. HCA is a wonderful example of collaboration between local people and workers from all around the world! The purpose of this organization is to work hand in hand with the community to help children become the adults of tomorrow through many educational and health programs. For me, it was also an opportunity to meet extraordinary people and learn more about myself.

Impactful work in a beautiful community

I have been volunteering for HCA for 7 months now and I absolutely love it! El Porvenir is such a welcoming and safe community, it has felt like home since the day I arrived. My favorite part about volunteering is the kids – they are so bright and silly and excited to learn! We all work very hard here and some days are long, but this has been such a fulfilling experience that I wouldn’t change a thing. It doesn’t hurt that we live right on the beach, so I can enjoy a daily sunset swim! I have 5 months left, but I can’t imagine leaving this place. If you want to work with kids and you speak (or want to speak) Spanish, I highly recommend volunteering with this organization.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Sopa de caracol! Caracol is a sea snail, this is a very common dish here. Honduran food is amazing :)
Pros
  • The students & community members
  • Living between the beach and the mountains
  • Sense of community in the volunteer houses
Cons
  • The heat
  • The mosquitoes
  • Electricity goes out sometimes...

Experience of a Lifetime

I have been in El Porvenir working with Honduras Child Alliance for 5 1/2 months now. When I applied to volunteer with HCA, I was not quite sure how I would feel about living in a place unknown to me for such a long period of time. What I quickly learned was that the community here is very welcoming, friendly, and safe. My favorite part about being in the community is connecting with locals and building relationships. I enjoy walking down the street and being greeted by the community members. HCA does a great job at showcasing their mission and vision throughout the community by delivering different programs and events. I love to call this place my second home.

Amazing Experience, Changed my Life

Honduras Child Alliance was my first longer volunteering experience. I had originally planned to stay 2 months, but I fell in love with the community and realized I had a lot left to learn from its people, that I returned for another 4 months.
The way the organization is set up, it truly fosters a great team spirit amongst the volunteers, and an opportunity to really integrate into the community. I loved every part of my day - planning with the team, carrying out the activities with the kids, going for a run after classes and being joined by the kids leaving school, ordering fresh watermelon juice at Iris's, a quick soccer game with the Bomberos, baleadas and a stroll on the beach, adult class, and guitar jam sessions with our in-house band.
The activities are set up so that, after some initial training, you can quickly integrate into the day-to-day, yet the management is open to new ideas and really supportive. When I extended my stay, I was able to set up a literacy program and work with some of the kids that we had spotted needed an extra little bit of support. My time in El Porvenir was really rewarding; I look back fondly and often remember amazing times - and whenever I do, temptation strikes and I start looking at flights... I'll be back one day, for sure!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The organization works hand in hand with the local Bomberos - the fire brigade - and in an initiative to raise awareness of the effects of drunk driving, we enacted a car accident and rescue mission. We were fully briefed, everything was planned and controlled - from a rough script to hair and makeup! - and it turned out to be really effective... so effective some of the younger kids forgot we were acting and wanted to help rescue us!!!
