My gap year was not a pause—it was a deliberate leap into a different dimension of living. GAC provided the coordinates, but China became the territory. The program's intelligent design allowed me to oscillate between roles: one month interning at a green tech startup in Hangzhou, the next studying classical philosophy at a Nanjing university, and another volunteering in a Yunnan village. Each experience informed the next, building a compound understanding of modern China. The true lesson was in the liminal spaces—the unplanned conversations on overnight trains, the silent understanding exchanged over a shared meal, the resilience forged by navigating the beautifully unfamiliar. I returned not with a plan, but with a new lens—one that finds clarity in complexity and home in the horizon.
