Unique first experience with volunteering abroad for studentgroup.

I share my experience as a teacher at a Norwegian preuniversity school in Norway. The last 2 years I have brought to different groups of preuniversity students (19-21 years old) to have their first experience with volunteerwork abroad in Ghana. I chose Atlas volunteers among a lot of other programs because they appeared to be the best option for us. And I did not regret. In January 2026 I will bring the 3. group of students to volunteer with Atlas volunteers because both my students and I have been so satisfied with our experiences there.

The staff at Atlas Volunteers are very helpfull both before you arrive and during our stay. They make every volunteer fell included, appreciated and part of the Atlas familiy. The staff also spend time with the volunteers after working hours, in social activities, conversacions, language lessons and excursions among other things. We also loved the volunteerhousing where all the volunteers stay together in one big house with a courtyard in the middle. It was so easy to get to know other volunteers, and afternoon and evenings are often spent together.

It is also great that the organization organize common activities for everyone who wants to join in the afternoon/evening. Including games, football, making dinner together, going out etc..

We appreciated the team meetings in the afternoon, twi language course with Dom, common dinners and excursions to lake Volta and beautiful viewpoints.

When it comes to volunteering itself, we had a great experience with the kids at different local schools. One thing that is great about Atlas Volunteers is that they really listen to what the local schools wants and how the schools believe the volunteers best can contribute at their school. Atlas do not present a readymade program to the local communities, they find their way together, they are part of the local communities and makes sure volunteer work contributes to local needs and wishes.

The volunteer experience at local schools with Atlas has really been an impactful and important experience for my students. I am really looking forward to go back again with a new student group in January.
