About Program
The Balkan Language Initiative supports undergraduates, graduate students, and research scholars in the study of five regional languages in the Balkans. Through this program, participants can study in Tirana (Albania), Belgrade (Serbia), Podgorica (Montenegro), Skopje (North Macedonia), Sofia (Bulgaria), and Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina). American Councils arranges individual or small group programs of study for language, literature, or history at leading institutions throughout the Balkans. Support for participants and supervision of programs is provided by American Councils' extensive network of overseas staff and offices.
American Councils arranges academic affiliations, classes, housing, medical care and in-country transportation for participants. Regional staff conduct an in-country orientation upon each participant's arrival and provide ongoing logistical support, including an emergency contact-person who is available at all times to participants.
