The Maya people did not separate knowledge of the cosmos from everyday life. What is often called a "worldview" is, in reality, a system for understanding the world that was developed through centuries of observation, ceremony, and oral tradition — carefully preserved by the elders, the respected custodians of this knowledge.
This program offers a rigorous and experiential introduction to that system of knowledge.
The Cholq'ij: The Sacred Calendar
The Cholq'ij is a 260-day calendar that does not measure time in the way a clock does — it describes it. Each day carries a name, an energy, and a purpose. The combination of 20 day signs (Uwach Q'ij in K'iche') and 13 numerical energies creates a unique cycle of 260 combinations that the Maya used — and continue to use — to understand the cycles of nature, community, and human life.
