Teaching English in Public Schools
- Italy
- Naples
About Program
You'll support English Teachers in providing classes and doing conversation with students of different ages (6-18 years old) in Naples public schools. Naples has a high student drop-out rate (23%) with many children choosing to leave their education early in favor of finding work on the streets..In some areas of Naples, public schools do not have the means to offer extra-curricular activities to students or alternative applied ways of teaching. As a volunteer on the Teaching English project in Italy, you will help address this gap by either assisting local teachers during the day at a public school. On the Teaching English project, you will be placed in a public school in Naples where you will assist teachers in the daily English classes. We work with primary, middle and high schools, with different settings and goals, and you'll teach correct pronunciation, everyday expressions, american/australian/british or canadian differences and promote intercultural dialogue.

Program Impact
This program aims also to work on the Italian problem of the low level of the English language, the incapacity of communicating with different cultures. This program, thanks to the fact that students can meet people from different countries and cultures, is like a kind of new air in the school which can excite them and improve their motivation and the efforts they put into studying English. Thanks to the help of volunteers they can realize that English is not just a subject in school, but a way to communicate with people coming from other parts of the World and a fundamental way to get opportunities to explore the world or get a job. After the initial orientation, you will usually have a morning shift at your placement and will work for approximately 4 hours per day. Please note that start times and daily workload depends on the school.
