About Program

Joining Maldives Whale Shark Research ( MWSR) is a life-changing experience. The research expedition offers you the opportunity to get hands-on with research and data collection, increase your knowledge on marine conservation, and have a great time doing it. You will learn and get involved in every aspect of what MWSR do, from taking I.D shots to counting vessels and helping record data. You will make a valuable contribution to the work conducted by MWSR, and in doing so help to conserve whale sharks and their marine habitat.

Program Impact

Contribute to whale shark science meaningfully by joining MWSR on board expedition vessel MV Akoya Pearl and assist in collecting important data on the biggest fish in the ocean. Each day take a daily survey trip on our accompanying dhoni, through the largest Marine Protected Area of the Maldives, South Ari Marine Protected Area. Home to a group of whale sharks that are unusually present all year round and display the highest natural residency rate of anywhere in the world.

Your travel spend sustains the local economy and the livelihoods of locals, including the local NGO, tour leader and local suppliers.
Contribute to the protection of coral reefs and marine life through research and data collection.
Participate in a beach clean-up, directly removing debris and protecting marine life from pollution.
