Program Impact
The Balangoda Restoration Project contributes to restoring degraded rainforest landscapes within the wider Sinharaja forest ecosystem in Sri Lanka. Years of deforestation and unsustainable land use have fragmented important habitats. Through ecological restoration, the project works to re-establish native forest cover, improve biodiversity, and strengthen watershed protection in this biologically significant region.
Volunteers take part in hands-on restoration activities such as planting native trees, maintaining young forest plots, assisting natural regeneration, and supporting sustainable land management practices. These efforts help rebuild ecological corridors for wildlife, improve soil stability, and increase water retention in the landscape.
The project also supports local communities by promoting sustainable farming practices and environmental awareness while creating meaningful cultural exchange between volunteers and village communities. Over time, these efforts contribute to biodiversity recovery, stronger climate resilience, and the long-term protection of rainforest ecosystems in Sri Lanka.
