A great opportunity to intern in a hospital

Hi everyone, I am Sara Herz, I am a recent graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University. I got my degrees in Biology, Psychology and Chemistry. I am here in Athens, Greece on a scholarship from my college, which I am very grateful for.

I picked Athens so that I would be able to meet a bunch of different people and the opportunity to intern in a hospital. Everyone here has done exactly what they were instructed to do, I really appreciate all of their help. I couldn’t have asked for a better internship and I would recommend this to anyone.

What was your funniest moment?
Tried ordering coffee in Greek, asked for iced potato instead of espresso.
Pros
  • Great networking opportunities.
  • Chance to explore a vibrant city
  • Boosted confidence and independance
Cons
  • Honestly, I woudn't change a thing

Having great time with a really nice program

Hi, my name is Tashir Balard, I am from New Jersey and I came to this program because I basically wanted to see the coacher in a different country and see how they work in a hospital and see the technology and gain a different experience how they do it here, outside the US.

Besides that, I am an undergraduate student in biochemistry and here in Athens is a very nice place, the people were really helpful. For example, I’ve had trouble with the metro and they have helped me very easily. They are very nice.

During my time at the hospital I saw so many surgeries, I also saw a spinal fusion which is a very hard surgery- approximately nine hours- it was really good. I watched a brain tumor surgery. Today I am at the kidney analysis.

The program itself is really nice. The directors are here for you when you need them. They are really one text away. Yes, great time.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
One of the most surprising things I experienced was watching a spinal fusion surgery. I had never seen anything so complex and intense. It was eye opening to witness how dedicated and skilled the surgeons were.
Pros
  • Living in Athens offered a chance to experience a different healthcare system and local hospitality
  • Directors were easily accessible and responsive , making participants feel guided and cared for
  • Observing complex surgeries like spinal fusion and brain tumor operations provided real clinical exposure
Cons
  • Everything has been covered

Absolutely incredible program

Hi, I am Nikita and I come from the University of Newcastle, Australia. I did this program as part of my placement fee at the University. It has been amazing. I’ve seen so many different departments and surgeries.

Greece itself is absolutely incredible; so many things to see and do. And the staff was also amazing. It gave me the chance to work alongside outstanding professionals, learn through experience and gain insights that will stay with me throughout my career.

I truly recommended to everyone!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing was seeing how many different departments and surgeries I got to observe. It was way more diverse than I expected
Pros
  • Diverse exposure to departments and surgeries
  • Supportive and professional staff
  • Unique cultural and travel experience in Greece
Cons
  • I honestly have nothing negative to add

Favorite program in a wonderful city

Hi, I am Zoe, I am a graduate from the University South Florida. I chose this internship because I wanted to explore a new city and shadow doctors. The program directors here have been amazing. They would accommodate our every need.

My favorite thing was that I’ve been able to see the actual surgeries and stand in the rooms.

Athens is absolutely beautiful and I think everyone should visit Athens at least once.

The cultural experiences, the food , and the welcoming atmosphere made this internship even more memorable!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
One of the most unfamiliar things I tried was grilled octopus. I had never eaten it before coming to Greece, and I was a little unsure ta first because of the texture and the idea of it. But it turned out to be surprisingly delicious , tender and smoky. It was on of the dishes that made me realize how fresh and flavorful Greek food can be. I'm really glad I stepped out of my comfort zone with that one.
Pros
  • Very supportive and friendly program coordinators
  • Unique opportunity to observe real medical procedures up close
  • Beautiful city with rich culture and great food
Cons
  • Honestly, I don't really have any complaints.

A unique opportunity for knowledge and socialization

Hi, I am Filomila Mouzouraki, I live here in Greece. I chose this program as an aspiring doctor. It gave me the opportunity to visit different specialties and give me a sense of what I want to do with the rest of my life. I also chose this program because it gave me the opportunity to meet new people and exchange information, experiences and generally just laugh with people from all over the world- because that’s really exciting for me.

As far as the program is concerned, I fell in love with surgery and the OR, because it is an opportunity I don’t think I could have anywhere else.

The coordinators were so nice. I would totally recommend- five out of five stars. They are easy to communicate with and they would give you the advice and the help you need, just one text away. So, it’s cool. And, as a Greek, I will say that Athens is cool as well.

What was your funniest moment?
One of the funniest moments was when a group of us tried to explain our local slang to each other during a lunch break. Everyone came from different countries , so every expression sounded strange or hilarious to someone. We were laughing so hard that even the doctors nearby were smiling. It was one of those simple moments that made the whole experience feel warm and unforgettable.
Pros
  • Great exposure to different medical secialties
  • Friendly and supportive coordinators
  • Opportunity to meet and connect with people from many countries
Cons
  • I don't have anything else to contribute

Gained experience from a very organized program

Hi, I am Ingrid, I am from North Carolina. I go to school in California and I chose to go on a dental internship because I wanted to gain experience, especially in Greece and also get to explore the dental industry in more detail.

I’ve had a great experience. I got to see all the different specialties, shadow a lot of procedures and the dentists have all been really nice and welcoming and would answer a lot of questions.

Exploring Athens has also been really great. It’s a great city so I definitely would choose to come here again if I had the option.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing was how welcoming and open the dentist was. I didn't expect him to involve me so much in real procedures and take time to explain everything so clearly-it really made the experience unforgettable!
Pros
  • Very welcoming and supportive dentist
  • Hands-on learning experience during real procedures
  • Great opportunity to explore Athens and its culture
Cons
  • Nothing negative to mention

An internship that gave me great opportunities

Hi, my name is Jackson Deneka and I’m from Tennessee in the US, and I also attend University at Tennessee and I am doing this internship a the Metropolitan Hospital and I’ve really enjoyed my time. It’s given me great opportunities to witness different specialties including surgeries and clinical practice. It’s given me a great opportunity to really decide which health career I want to pursue as a profession.

I chose Athens as a chance to travel abroad, get to meet new people and have a great experience to see what different cultures are like. In terms of medical practices, this internship has given us a lot of opportunity, go out on the weekends, see Athens and enjoy all of the rich history that Athens has to provide. This internship has done a great job of helping me mix balance both between getting shadowing experience and also getting a rich cultural experience. So, I would recommend this to anyone that’s interested in this type of opportunity.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing for me was seeing how different medical practices were in Greece compared to the U.S, especially observing surgeries and clinical work. I was also surprised by how well I could balance this experience with exploring Athens and discovering its rich culture.
Pros
  • Exposure to different medical practices and specialties
  • Great cultural experience by exploring Athens and its rich history
  • Balance between professional shadowing and personal growth abroad
Cons
  • N/A

A really great practice

Hi, my name is Anna Passas, I am a nursing student at the Northeastern University. I’m here, in Greece, for the medical internship. I chose Greece partly to practice my Greek and also to working at a hospital in Boston I wanted to compare to how it’s here in Athens. It’s been really great having time to explore and see Athens. See the cultural differences, the food, and also my program was very accommodating. I told them I was interested in cardiology, so they made an effort to show me everything related to cardiology in the hospital. So it’s been awesome, really great!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
One of the most surprising things I experienced was how personalized the hospital training was. I didn't expect them to tailor my internship to my interest in cardiology-it made the whole experience feel so much more meaningful.
Pros
  • Highly knowledgeable physicians and deeply enriching clinical exposure
  • Exploring Historic Athens
  • A wide variety of delicious local food
Cons
  • Nothing to say
