Alumni Spotlight: Catherine Rose

I'm from West Hartford, Connecticut. My go to dance move is the sprinkler. Works every time. I love to travel and I love photography.

Why did you pick this program?

I picked this program because I really wanted to go to Italy, and it was one of the few that I found that could make this happen.

What do you tell your friends who are thinking about going abroad?

Do it! Do it now! Don't wait, no matter where you are in life! Now is as good a time as any! I promise, it will change your life and you will never regret it.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

Learn a little Italian before you go. It will really help.

What's your favorite story to tell about your time abroad?

When I went to visit Napoli (Naples), I get to the lift at the hostel I had planned on staying at that night. I see a sign next to the lift that indicated that it only worked between certain hours and on certain days. And during certain times of the day I had to pay a 5 or 10 cent euro. I took a picture. To be precise, this is what it said:

"We are on the 7th floor. The lift works by putting a 5 cent euro piece into the black box between these times..Monday-Friday: 8-13:00 and 15:30-19:30. Saturday and Sunday are free. If you do not have 5 cents, 10 works as well. Don't try and put 1 and 2 cent pieces or anything else in or you will block the magic lift machine. No more than 3 people with bags at a time or you might just get stuck. Trust the lift, it has not failed us yet." I decided to walk up to the 7th floor and the guy goes, "did you just get here?" I said "yes." He asked, "did you just walk up seven flights of stairs?" I said, "yes, I was not about to pay 5 cents to take the lift." I realize now how stingy that made me sound.

Where was your favorite place to travel in Italy?

Napoli & the Amalfi Coast. But you must see Poampeii as well.
