Why did you study abroad with GlobaLinks at James Cook University?
Bethany: I decided to study abroad with GlobaLinks at James Cook University because of the university’s ability to offer me numerous class choices but still maintain a small and personal class size. I found James Cook University to also have a small and manageable campus size which would not be overwhelming in a foreign country. I found my choice to be very suiting for myself coming from a small home university. The location of James Cook University in Cairns also pulled me towards the university. James Cook University in Cairns was close to the Great Barrier Reef, near the apartments I was considering and a good side community area with just the right amount of activities to fulfill my free time.
What made your study abroad experience unique and special?
Bethany: I think the part that stands out the most to me as to what made the experience so unique and special was the people of the Cairns area. It was very refreshing to go somewhere without knowing anyone and meet very welcoming and friendly locals. Several of the life long friends I made in Cairns were not necessarily classmates or other Americans, but locals within the area.
Another experience which was unique while in Cairns was the over night scuba trip. While out on the Great Barrier Reef I was able to dive a total of six dives and even get to do one night dive. The sea life I saw while on this dive trip was amazing and breathe taking. I was able to see Giant Clams, Clown Fish, Parrot Fish, Sting Rays, an Octopus, and beautifully colored corals. The experiences I will never forget and am always sharing with others.
How has this experience impacted your future?
Bethany: I think this experience has impacted my future by opening my eyes to other cultures and ways of life. It also helped me figure out who I am and the person I want to be. The experiences from Australia can and will help me in my future personally because I now know more of what I am seeking in life. Professionally, I believe the experience makes me more attractive to employers because I feel they appreciate the courage it took to push my own boundaries.
