Why did you decide to study abroad with GlobaLinks at JCU?
Joan: When I was going through the application process to study abroad I was initially working with another program. However, after talking our GlobaLinks Representative at an on campus meeting, I realized that GlobaLinks was a much better program for me. I spent the next couple of weeks deciding which university I wanted to study at and was constantly calling our representative. Everyone was extremely helpful in helping me find a program and James Cook University was the only program that offered Art classes the semester I wanted to study so it all just fit.
What made your study abroad experience unique and special?
Joan: When we got to Australia, we were greated by our representatives whom we had worked with for the past 6 months getting prepared to study abroad. It was awesome having a welcoming face greeting us at the airport. I greatly enjoyed the orientation time in Cairns as it gave the group time to bond and get to know each other before going onto campus. I also had the opportunity to travel a great amount while I was in Australia which was a big plus as I got to discover many parts of the country and try new things with every trip. All of my trips were organized by the on campus program "Sharkies" and I spent a lot of time in their office deciding where I wanted to travel to next. I also participated in the stop over program through GlobaLinks and got to spend 10 days on the South Island of New Zealand.
How has this experience impacted your future?
Joan: This experience has allowed me to grow not only as a person but also as a cultural representative. I am currently working on my Masters in Teaching and my certification in Middle School Science. One topic that is constantly covered in schools is cultural acceptance. It has been extremely beneficial to be able to relate my time in Australia with my students and use my experiences as talking points in my classroom.
