Alumni Spotlight: Kelsey Mirehouse

Why did you decide to study abroad with GlobaLinks at University of Otago?

Kelsey: I decided to study abroad with Globalinks at the University of Otago because it was a program that ran through my school. They also provided the Bridging Cultures program the first week of arrival that was really helpful. I decided to study at the University of Otago because it had courses that could transfer to my major directly and also the city wasn't too big with a lot of potential for activities around Dunedin.

What made your study abroad experience unique and special?

Kelsey: There are many factors that went into making my time in NZ absolutely amazing but a lot of them have to do with the people that I met while abroad. Some of my best friends now came from the same program and also the Kiwis that I met were absolutely wonderful! There are plenty of things you can do by yourself but there is a quote that helps in this situation: "Happiness is only true when shared." Gaining some of the best friends I'll ever have and doing some of the most adventurous and fun things is such a great combination!

How has this experience impacted your future?

Kelsey: Going into my study abroad experience I pretty much had the rest of my life planned out, especially what I was going to do with school and after school. As my time in NZ progressed I realized that there was a much bigger world out there that I still have time to explore so my plans slowly began to change in my mind. Coming home for good after NZ has left me with much more opportunities and confidence that life doesn't always need to be planned out to a T and it definitely is more than okay to change your mind about it.
