Alumni Spotlight: Amanda Hoo

Why did you decide to intern abroad with CAPA in Sydney?

Amanda at the Sydney Opera House.

Amanda: I decided to intern in Australia because I wanted to bring something different to my resume. Being a business minor and being able to immerse myself into another countries business world was a great opportunity to see how different countries business norms differed from my own. With the CAPA program they matched us with companies that were in our fields of study and all of the acceptances were based solely on our resumes, which made me feel pretty confident about working in another country.

Plus to some recruiters hiring for a job international experience gives you more appeal, I think. And plus being a junior and only a year away from graduation interning gave me the opportunity to figure out where, and what I wanted for my career. Loving this internship I know now that I want to pursue PR and travel as much as possible with my job.

What made this intern abroad experience so unique and special?

Amanda: I absolutely loved my internship experience abroad, I was able to do so much more than I expected. They really threw me right into the Australian world and I saw myself doing media kits and interacting with retailers all around Australia. Through working in the country I was able to learn so much more about it because co-workers and other interns were telling me all the in's and out's I wouldn't have known being just a student. It was unique and special about the intern placement was it made me actually think about living in the country, I mean I could actually see myself working here and living in this foreign lands for a few years. I was able to gain so much hands on experience and it wasn't just my internship a lot of my other friends who had done this program didn't expect to be so interactive with the company. The Australians really took us in and showed us their life. It was a great time and would go back in a heartbeat to work there full time!

How has this experience impacted your future?

Amanda: This experience was definitely life changing! I now cannot wait to book another trip and start traveling as much as possible. Personally I learnt so much about myself and discovered so many more of my likes and dislikes, it has definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone but into a whole new world of possibilities.

What is one piece of advice you would give someone considering interning abroad in London?

Amanda: You don't if you dont like it, until you've tried it!! If you can do it and intern, GO FOR IT!!
