Alumni Spotlight: Madeline Coughlin

Now a graduate of Hope College, Madeline currently resides in Wheaton, Illinois, working as a sales associate as well as attending school part-time before applying to Optometry Schools. She loves cooking, design, and enjoying nature. Madeline began her studies of the French language at the age of 13 and by 21, realized her dream by studying abroad from mid June to the end of July, 2012 in Arles, France.

Why did you decide to study abroad with IES Abroad?

IES Abroad Arles, France

Madeline: I chose IES Abroad based on their reputation for quality programs that combine learning both inside and outside of the classroom. As a science major, I did not have the room or time to study abroad for a full semester or year. The programs offered by IES were long enough to earn significant academic credit and have the experience of living abroad.

What made this experience unique and special?

Madeline: High above all else, were the people. The staff in the US and France, the instructors, all of the host families, the locals, and the other students in the program. They are the ones that create each summer’s unique feel and experience.

How has this experience impacted your future?

Madeline: Professionally, studying or interning abroad really sets you apart from other job candidates. It is unique and intriguing while showing you are experienced in adapting to a new environment and curious to learn. Academically, this program helped me complete the requirements for me to receive my minor in French. The course offerings were also subjects that I found interesting that I would not have had time to fit in with all of my science classes back at Hope. And personally, this trip gave me so many memories that I will cherish for a lifetime. It only increased my love of the French culture and traveling. I have come to know more about myself and what I want out of life, and I will use the lessons I learned abroad for the rest of my life.
