Alumni Spotlight: Shari Freese

Shari Freese is a 35 year old massage therapist and a newly graduated registered nurse. She went to school for nursing at North Seattle Community College. After working for a year as a nurse she decided to reward herself with a trip to Peru. During her stay in Cusco in March and April of 2013, she attended Trilogia School.

Why did you decide to study with Trilogia School?

Shari: I was looking for something to do while I was in Cusco to make my trip a learning experience. I came across Trilogia’s website, and learned that they also offered Medical volunteering. I decided this was a perfect way to enjoy a beautiful country while building my resume. Correspondence with Yesica was very reassuring as I was planning my trip. She always promptly answered my questions, and adapted the program to specifically fit my needs.

What made this experience unique and special?

Trilogia School students in Peru

Shari: What made this experience special was the individualized attention I received. Yesica set up my living situation, picked me up from the airport and showed me around town. As a person traveling on my own for the first time, she made me feel welcomed and safe.

She was kind of my personal travel guide and friend as well as my teacher!! Included in the program was a city tour. I got to experience the beautiful cathedrals along with the mysterious and majestic Inca ruins.

This amplified my experience of the beautiful town and helped me experience the rich culture better. Yesica and Genera both specifically customized their teaching based on what I needed to know for my volunteer position and my travels. I think that it was especially helpful that the teaching was part book curriculum and part conversational.

Describe your program socially and academically.

Shari: I was the only student attending at the time, so except for my interactions with Yesica and Genera the program wasn’t very social for me. However, I really appreciate all of the friends and memories that I made, and I felt so much pride that I could actually have a conversation with a stranger in Spanish, thanks to the wonderful teachers at Trilogia! Academically, the curriculum was well thought out, it’s pace was challenging enough to keep me on my toes, but never overwhelming.
