Alumni Spotlight: Emily Besinger

Emily Besinger was born and raised just outside the city of Chicago, attended college in Indiana and is always planning her next travel adventure. She’s currently in search of the best Korean BBQ in Chicago and enjoys baking in her down time.

Why did you decide to teach English abroad with Greenheart Travel in South Korea?

Emily with some of her students in South Korea

Emily: I decided to teach English in South Korea with Greenheart Travel because they were so supportive. I looked at other companies, but Sara at Greenheart was so involved in the process.

She answered every question I had, even the really stupid ones, and made the process seem so much easier. Going through EPIK can be really confusing and requires a lot of paperwork and steps, but Greenheart worked really hard to outline each stage and what I needed to do to advance.

Ten years from now, what's the one thing you think you'll remember from the trip?

Emily: Ten years from now I think I’ll remember all of the friends I made. It was an amazing experience because you’re not only exposed to Korean culture, but also to all the other teachers who come from all over the world.

I have friends scattered around now, and I even went to visit my friend from the UK who is now teaching in Spain. It’s awesome to have those connections and I can’t wait to hopefully see everyone again at a 10 year reunion!

Has your worldview changed as a result of your trip?

Emily and some fellow English teachers at the Boryeong Mud Festival.

Emily: I think this trip has made the world seem smaller. I now have friends all over the world and Korea will always hold a special place in my heart. It just makes you realize that even when you step out of the familiar, things aren’t so different or scary.

Tell me about one person you met.

Emily: One person who really helped me make my experience so great was Sara from Greenheart Travel. She worked really hard to make sure I was comfortable with everything.

With the help of her, the Greenheart team, and Greenheart Alum writing blogs and sharing on facebook, I felt totally prepared for my trip!

Any tips for someone considering this program in the future?

Emily: Do it! I know it can seem scary packing up your life and moving across the world where you don’t know anyone, but seriously just do it. The hardest thing to do is actually get on the plane, but the second you step into the Seoul airport, you’re already a different person.
