Alumni Spotlight: Samantha Efrusy

Interview with Samantha Efrusy

Why did you choose the International TEFL Academy?

Samantha: I decided to get my TEFL certification through the International TEFL Academy because there was an office very close to me in Chicago and the online classes were convenient. The people there were very helpful and friendly.

How did the course prepare you for teaching abroad?

Samantha: The classes taught me how to handle some situations, but to be honest I've learned much more through experience. I teach both children and adults and both are do different so I am happy I took the extra young learned and business professional TEFL classes.

Describe your day to day activities as a teacher?

Samantha: I currently teach a preschool and kindergarten class at a Montessori school in Coban, Guatemala. I have a Spanish teaching assistant but I am in charge of lesson plans and most of the teaching. I have 12 students between the age of 4 and 6. In the evenings I teach intermediate and upper intermediate adults. I have 1-2 classes every night. I also host a conversation corner for adults. All levels can come in and I have conversation topics or activities for them to participate in. I am working full time and I am very busy. My only day off is Sunday.

How has this experience impacted your future?

Samantha: As for my future, I know I want to teach and travel for a few years, but I do not see this as a permanent occupation. I still plan on going to medical school at some point. I tend not to plan too far ahead, so anything can happen!! I do love Coban and I may stay here for a couple years.

What is one piece of advice you would give to those thinking about pursuing a TEFL certificate?

Samantha: As for my future, I know I want to teach and travel for a few years, but I do not see this as a permanent occupation. I still plan on going to medical school at some point. I tend not to plan too far ahead, so anything can happen!! I do love Coban and I may stay here for a couple years.
