Staff Spotlight: Dr. Alejandra Barahona

Title:
Executive Director
My pronouns are she/her/ella. As the director of LCI Veritas & LCI Barcelona Study Abroad, I oversee all administrative and academic operations of our international programs. I am a Board of Directors member at the College Consortium for International Studies and the founder of the Association of Costa Rican Universities for International Education. I am proud to be a certified professional in education abroad from The Forum on Education Abroad. I completed my PhD at UCLA and would love to connect with fellow Bruin colleagues. I love co-designing courses and study abroad programs with partner institutions to ensure students have a fantastic experience abroad.

What is your favorite travel memory?

My favorite travel memory is when I studied abroad in France, where I discovered my passion for exploring different cultures and learning from diverse lifestyles. With a student Eurail pass and a backpack, I traveled to several European countries, savoring the food, visiting unique places, and meeting fascinating people.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Since working for my current company, I have grown significantly personally and professionally. Collaborating with international educators has broadened my perspective on global education trends and best practices. Being in constant contact with students has enriched my understanding of their diverse needs and aspirations, allowing me to create more impactful and meaningful study abroad programs. This experience has expanded my knowledge and deepened my commitment to fostering cross-cultural learning and global collaboration.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

One of the best stories I've heard from a return student is about how their study abroad experience completely transformed their career path. Initially majoring in business, this student spent a semester abroad and became deeply inspired by the power of cross-cultural exchange. They returned with a newfound passion for international education, ultimately changing their major to global studies. Motivated by their transformative experience, they now aspire to work in international education, helping other students discover the world and broaden their horizons just as they did. And the most fantastic thing is that this has happened to not just one student!

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

If I could go on any program our company offers, I would choose our soon-to-be-launched study abroad
program in Melbourne, Australia. I am particularly excited about this program because it provides a unique opportunity to explore the synergies between our Costa Rica and Australia programs in climate action and regenerative culture education. Participating in this program would allow me to gain firsthand insights into how we can integrate these crucial themes across different continents, enriching our students' learning experiences and fostering a global approach to sustainability.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

Our company is unique due to our competency-based and experiential teaching model, small class sizes, and exceptional student support services. I am particularly proud of how our faculty, staff, and host families are all dedicated to creating an inclusive and nurturing environment that genuinely engages students' growth and experiences. Their commitment ensures that each student receives personalized attention and support, fostering an enriching and transformative study abroad experience.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

I believe the biggest factor in our company's success is our responsiveness and flexibility. We consistently go the extra mile to support our students, ensuring their needs are met, and their experiences are enriching. Our strong communication and collaboration with partners allow us to create innovative programs, solve problems efficiently, and explore new opportunities for fostering transformative experiences. This commitment to adaptability and partnership sets us apart and drives our continued success.
