About Program

General Description:
LoPair EduCare Program is a fully funded travel and cultural homestay program with strong education component. It provides insight to the Chinese culture and lifestyle by living with the locals while travelling at one’s free time. The host benefit from learning English and respective culture from the participant.

Entry Qualification:
- Native English speaker
- Undergraduate or above
- Good academic background, top university preferred
- Preferably with 200 hours of tutoring experience

Program Components:
- 30 days, 60 days homestay with room and board all included
- Host family located in metropolis: Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou
- Round-trip flights provided by LoPair

Exciting and New

This is my first time going abroad on my own. In addition it is for 3 months, and I am about a month in already. I met some great new people and made new friends as well.

Future participants will get a unique experience and no one will have the same exact experience.

So far my favourite experience is when my friends and I went to explore a shop nearby the school. We had a lot of fun and a lot of laughs. (Those that were there know the story)

I believe this is a great opportunity to see and experience a different language and culture. This program also offers a chance to meet new people and make lifelong friends. You also will have great stories to tell to your friends and family back home.

What would you improve about this program?
I found it difficult to find the school on my first day. I arrived about 2 hours early for class and found the school within an hour with the help of a kind stranger who spoke English.

Having a Beijing coordinator or already existing students escort the new comers to the school would have been helpful. To my knowledge everyone had asked how to find the school by asking existing students or by a stranger.

By having a Beijing coordinator it would relieve a lot of the worries and stress of being late to school on your first day. Especially if you are unable to leave early from the host family's home.

What would you improve about this program?
Having someone (Beijing coordinator) escort the aupairs to the school. Everyone got lost and we had to ask the locals until we found someone who spoke or understood English. Having our coordinator walk us there on our first day would have made it easier to find the school.

My first time in Asia

It has been a great experience. I always wanted to go to Asia and thanks to lopair I could make it. It’s the easiest, cheapest and funniest way to stay longer, to study Chinese and to get connected to this different and special culture. I totally recommend it, in particular cause lopair staff is really helpful and supports you every time you need. I also got very lucky with my family— I was a family member for them and I travel a lot with them.

Au pair Hanzhou with lopair

Excellent! A very fun and inclusive way to really experience a different culture. Hangzhou is a beautiful city and lots of interesting touristy things to do on days off. West lake at sunset is a must! The food is great and my family have been good at introducing me to a wide range of cuisine. The culture class is a great oppurtinity to meet up with the other au pairs and enjoy chinese culture together. Travelling in China is also relatively easy and cheap with high speed rail links between most major cities.

What would you improve about this program?
The classes could be improved if arriving au pairs were not put in the same class as au pairs who have already been in class for 2 months.

Why did you choose this program?

I chose this program because it offered an opportunity to experience a different culture and language. This program also offers a chance to use the knowledge I have gained from my education and put it into practice.

I have recently been interested in learning Mandarin, and I also wanted to be able to assist someone learn English as a second language. This program enabled me to improve my Chinese as well as learn from teaching the child.

What did your program provider assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

The Webinar for the pre-departure was very helpful and insightful. The Program Coordinator assisted me by answering questions and concerns about interactions with families, cultural differences, and other questions via WeChat. Having the Program Coordinator made the transition into the host family very smooth.

As for what we have to organize by ourselves, we try to find times in our schedules when we are all available and meet up. This can be challenging at times when all of us have different "off" days

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

One piece of advice I'd give is to bring some extra spending cash. If the family pays the aupair closer to the end of the month, you won't have any money for snacks or souvenirs.

Especially in China, I'd recommend buying a translator app (I bought a 3 month subscription with Speak and Translate) as well as VPN so you are able to access more familiar sites such as Google, Youtube, and Facebook.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

An average week consists of 5 hours or so teaching the host child English. The host family is very welcoming and kind, always trying to get the aupair to eat more.

During the afternoon, I'd sometimes wander the streets near the neighborhood or just go for a walk. If anyone is available at the same time, we try to meet up.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

My biggest fear was to be more outgoing and be more of an extrovert. I'm not very adventurous, and it is my first time travelling abroad alone. I've always had my family within a close proximity, so these three months was a challenge for myself to become more independent.

I am more of an introvert and prefer to be in a familiar environment. However, as I have travelled half way around the world, it seems silly of me to try and stay inside when I'm in a different country. So I'm making more of an effort to travel around nearby cities.

Of course there are other aupairs with you with whom you can talk to and share experiences with. At first, I'd want to be with a friend when exploring, but now I feel confident enough to venture on my own without the need of another to be present.

Joey is a 27-year-old who studied Exhibition and Economy Management at University in China then graduated from the University of Surrey, UK, with a masters degree in International Events Management.

What is your favorite travel memory?

LoPair Aupairs in China

I went to the Isle Of Wight once with my mates. We reached to the sight called needle point by walking (normally people take a tour bus). We took all kinds pictures in the way and enjoyed the amazing view. The nature and the experience will stay in my memory for a very long time.

Which destination is most underrated? Conversely, which is most overrated?

1. In southernChina, there are lots of villages separated among piles of mountains. They still remain some of the customs from ancient days and speak dialogues only few can understand. To visit their lifestyle and environment would give a visitor a remarkable experience.

2. Sanya, Hainan. Hainan has become the international Tourism Island since 2008, but except the well-developed beach sights and top hotels, the city Sanya is quite dirty and messy. On summers, there are way too many people gathering on beaches and sea. Also, safety issues are also a common problem there.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

Care about people.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

1. I have become more efficient in my work.

2. I am much more reliable than before, and I can handle things under pressure pretty well.

3. My interpersonal skills have improved.

What unique qualities does your company possess?

1. We have local coordinators to help family and au pair in every placement city. So we follow up their status while the whole program and provide our assistance.

2. We provide face to face Mandarin Classes but via internet.

3. We use international traveling insurance.

4. We do home visit to every family before take them in that make sure they understand and agree to our conditions, in order to protect the right of au pair.

5. We have well experience on visa application, and we provide free extension in China for au pairs in our program.

Describe a time when you felt especially proud to be part of your current team.

Some au pairs gave us farewell presents and heartwarming cards right before they left China.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

I have received too many stories like that for the past year, but they are rather short and fractional, sorry I can't tell which one is the best story.
