After unsuccessfully trying to learn Chinese for the past two years, my husband and I decided to spend our summer holiday differently. Rather than another trip around Europe, we enrolled in Keats' four-week intensive course. It turned out to be one of the best decisions we've ever made.
I have to admit, my husband was rather sceptical at first. Chinese looked impossible, and he doubted we'd remember more than *nǐ hǎo*. Four weeks later, he was confidently ordering food, chatting with locals, and proudly showing off his new language skills. Needless to say, he became a convert!
The teaching exceeded all my expectations. My teacher was incredibly patient, encouraging, and wonderfully organised. Every lesson was carefully planned, combining vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and—most importantly—real-life communication. We didn't just learn Chinese; we actually used it every single day.
Learning extended far beyond the classroom. Friday excursions took us to beautiful parks, museums, traditional tea houses, and other fascinating places around Kunming, where we practised Chinese with local people. It was immersive, practical, and surprisingly fun.
The evenings were just as memorable. Keats organised fantastic activities almost every night, from exploring lively night markets and tasting delicious local food to learning traditional handicrafts, playing Chinese games, watching films, and experiencing local culture firsthand. There was never a dull moment.
Above all, we met wonderful people from every corner of the world. We laughed, learned, explored, and created friendships that will last long after the course ended.
