About Program

The intensive one-on-one Chinese Program at Keats School is the most popular, and efficient, way to learn the Chinese language. One-on-one lessons give teachers the chance to meet the individual needs and interest of each student. It also gives the student more opportunities to practice speaking Chinese and to get real-time correction. At Keats School we individualize each lesson by developing curricula that matches the students proficiency level and goals. Teachers speak standard Mandarin and are fluent in English. The methods and different activities that we use at Keats will maximize the amount that a student learns in the time they study Chinese here.

You can choose to take the one-on-one Chinese lessons in the following locations:
- Kunming (headquarters)
- Chengdu
- Beijing
- Shanghai
- Chengde
- Xi'an

Study in Beijing

My time learning Chinese at Keats Beijing has been fantastic. The campus features bright, roomy classrooms. Situated in Jianguomen embassy area in downtown Beijing, it enjoys unbeatable accessibility to all parts of the city. The support staff provides efficient service and always replies to my needs rapidly.

I study with Teacher Du, who is an outstanding educator. Her teaching is clear and engaging. She adapts lessons to match my learning goals, patiently fixing my mistakes and building up my confidence to communicate in Mandarin. I have improved noticeably after studying with her.

Beijing offers an amazing living experience for international learners. You can explore ancient cultural sites and taste delicious local cuisine everywhere. Thanks to Keats’s great central location, I can freely arrange city trips after class. If you plan to study Mandarin in Beijing, Keats is an excellent choice.

Pros
  • Friendly teachers
  • Immersive language environment
  • Great food

Perfect experience in Kunming

Kunming was perfect and the school was great to help with recommendations and activities, everything was super fun. Lots of like minded learners with a range of abilities and all very open to new experiences. Keats team were fabulous and helped me a lot, from tailoring each lesson to ensuring that I had the best time on holiday, and the offering of free activities plus extra bonuses like calligraphy and music were amazing. Kunming in the summer is also fantastic to avoid the Chinese summer heat. And did I mention the food? Wow. It’s not mega spicy like some places and has a huge range of influences from indigenous peoples, and as my teachers explained also from the influx of internal migrants bringing their own tastes. Things like Yiliang duck, er kuai, tofu brain (it’s just mushy tofu!), rice noodles, and the endless mushrooms… Keats were super helpful with everything.

Helpful teachers

Since the first day the teachers have done everything in their power to make this a good experience for us the students. Since the first day when i lost my luggage the teachers have done their best to help us as exemplified by them going out of their way and biking to find my suitcase. They are always taking into consideration out opinions and preferences in everything we do from ordering food to going on excursions. They are very patient and happy to help in any way they can, and i am very grateful for the amazing experience they gave me!

Study in Beijing

Keats School provided thoughtful full support throughout my 5-week Chinese immersion trip, including clear pre-program communication, a personalized study and travel schedule, airport pickup and hassle-free transfers across seven cities (Shanghai, Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La, Kunming, Chongqing and Beijing), plus comfy accommodation close to classrooms and sights. I took customized one-on-one Mandarin lessons with dedicated Teacher Mrs Du; my listening skills and overall Chinese saw huge progress after targeted tutoring. I split my time between classes and cultural trips, staying in hotels and local accommodations to experience China’s diverse regional customs and master conversational Chinese. Every destination had it's unique appeal, yet Beijing left the deepest impression with its profound historic landmarks and timeless cultural heritage. This seamless, rewarding program filled many gaps in my self-taught Chinese, and I hope to join Keats again soon.

What was your funniest moment?
The funniest moment for me was discovering interesting quirks about the Chinese language that led to some funny misunderstandings from time to time. For example, as Chinese contains many homophones, there would be some words that I would mix up that wildly changed the meaning of sentences, leading to hilarious moments.
Pros
  • Access to an immersive environment to quickly improve my Mandarin level.
  • Comfortable accommodations including food, lodging, and travel.
  • Professional one on one teaching which allowed for massive growth in my Chinese skill.

I couldn’t have asked for a better Chinese learning experience at Keats Kunming!

Lǐ Lǎoshī is such a warm, energetic teacher who customized every one-on-one lesson fully around my personal learning goals. She always slips in cute little local life tips during class that make learning feel so fun and down-to-earth, and she even remembers all my tiny little learning preferences to make every session feel extra thoughtful.
Even with private classes, the evening social events let me meet so many lovely fellow learners easily. The whole team (Lily, Wang and Willow) are always so welcoming and quick to help with any small request I had. The school’s home-style local Yunnan food is incredibly tasty, and my study room was perfectly fitted to all my needs. On top of that, Kunming’s mild, spring-like weather was such a nice escape from the sweltering summer heat back in Italy. I can’t recommend this school enough!

One month in Kunming

Truly an unforgettable experience! Everything was fantastic—from the people and the food to the places visited and the progress made in Chinese. I recommend this experience to anyone wishing to immerse themselves in Chinese culture and language within a highly competent, well-prepared, supportive, and stimulating environment! This past month with my teacher, Willow, also led to an unexpected friendship—forged largely through the language—with a truly amazing person who manages to make entire days of lessons fun. An experience I highly recommend to everyone!

Summer 2026 in China

I spent a wonderful 7 weeks studying Chinese with Keats program. I chose to study one on one in different small towns in Yunnan. My teacher, Du Laoshi, was very flexible and let me choose what I wanted to focus on. Our first lesson, she reviewed the Chinese pronunciation of Pinyin and tones. She corrected me when I made mistakes and this helped me a lot. I brought my old textbooks that I used before so we could review grammar and vocabulary. I wanted to learn songs and she found the music and shared videos I could watch and also wrote the lyrics in Pinyin and English for me. Later, we ordered books of children's stories and idioms. Each place we went was unique and beautiful! We started in Puzhehei, which was full of lotus blossoms, then Jianshui which had a lot of history and felt very authentic. Then, we went to Pu'er to Jingmaishan where tea and mountains felt like heaven! After, I opted for a week break with a tour of Dali, Lijiang and Shangrila. I wish I had a week in both Lijiang and Dali! So cool and beautiful! After, I spent a week in Tengchong which I would definitely go back to. The old town is lovely and the views so peaceful. Finally, my last week of studying was in the Miao village. It was on a hillside and I climbed up and down 200 stairs everyday, but it was worth it! My last week is a tour of Chengdu. Everywhere is so much to see and lots of domestic tourism, but it is an experience of a lifetime. I can't wait to come back again and see more of this beautiful country!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Cicadas, fried! When I saw this on the table the first day in the mountains I thought, there's no way I'm going to eat that! But after a few days, I tried them and it wasn't so bad!
Pros
  • My teacher planned and organized everything! She kept the train schedule, booked the cars, made it easy for me to follow along.
  • My teacher was so helpful carrying my heavy luggage because I over packed!
  • My teacher was always there to help translate, but also encouraged me to ask for things and use my language with other people.

Amazing First Time in Mainland China

I have been taking online classes with Keats for over 5 years, and have spent well over 2 years with Pi-laoshi. i was so happy to finally meet her in person and truly experience life in Kunming. Our lessons are always fun, relevant, and challenging. Additionally, Pi-laoshi was always available for questions related to navigating daily life as a foreigner in mainland China. At her recommendation I visited Cuihu lake, the Botanical Garden, Heilongtan, and a number of beautiful cafes and bookstores, all of which I was able to visit with the language skills she helped me develop to ask for directions, make small talk with locals, and navigate the public transit system.

Additionally, the extracurriculars and events at Keats make our learning experience even more meaningful. Keats offers living accommodations as well as daily meals for all of their students, which is not only thoughtful but fosters student camaraderie. Kunming is such a beautiful city and for anyone who is interested in visiting while also learning Chinese I highly recommend the Keats school program.

Thank you Pi-laoshi and thank you Keats school for this wonderful experience. I only wish that we could have shared more time together!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Beef marrow with mapo tofu, and stinky tofu with sesame seeds. And I really enjoyed it :)
