About Program

The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course is Lincoln University's own English language pathway, preparing you for successful study at undergraduate or postgraduate level — no IELTS or TOEFL required. Taught by our in-house language division, the programme is delivered in ten four-week modules throughout the year, with assessment at the end of each module and ten intakes a year. A minimum enrolment of 12 weeks (three modules) applies, and study levels range from Elementary (IELTS 4.0 equivalent) to Advanced (IELTS 6.5 equivalent).

Each module builds academic writing, academic reading, listening and speaking in a university context, research skills, and referencing and academic integrity (APA), alongside individual teacher support and social integration. Successful completion meets the English language entry requirement for Lincoln's academic programmes. Students who go on to further study may also be eligible for an English for Further Studies fees rebate.

Rural New Zealand

Coming from California, my ideas of sustainability and conservation were centered around the stereotypical "green" concepts such as banning plastic bags and driving electric vehicles. Studying at Lincoln University has broadened my perspective of conservation, allowing me to recognise the importance of native and introduced species, sustainable agriculture, and much more. However, being surrounded by rural kiwi's has been both a blessing and a curse. At times, it can feel like you're stuck out in the middle of no-where with a bunch of people in shorts and gum boots. Luckily, I've found my crowd in the people that stand out; those with colorfully dyed hair, those who speak out against controversial agricultural practices, and those who ride scooters around the campus. I couldn't have asked for a better experience in New Zealand, thanks to Lincoln University and especially those involved with the soil science department :)

New Zealand and Lincoln University was an absolute blast and I had a wonderful experience while I was here. However, if you come to NZ for study abroad it is quite difficult to travel anywhere else besides the north and south islands. It is just so far from any other country besides Australia and is more expensive then you may expect. Unlike my friend who studied abroad in Thailand was able to see 8 other countries while he was there because traveling and living was so much cheaper. If I could do it all again I would choose somewhere in Asia or Europe so I could travel more and make New Zealand just a two month trip sometime in my future

What would you improve about this program?
This program could improve by planning cheap and fun trips for students to travel! It is quite difficult to travel in or around NZ, especially if you do not have a car.

Lincoln Uni Landscape Architecture

Lincoln University is very welcoming to international students. Lincoln University's Landscape Architecture program was also very accommodating to international students. The program is in depth and intensive with it's topics of study with very insightful tutors. It was interesting and beneficial to see landscape architecture from a slightly different perspective in a completely different part of the world. I would highly recommend this program if you are looking for thorough and hard-working landscape architecture studies.

What would you improve about this program?
Better coordination between tutors, or less overlap of tutors feedback at once.

Good experience

Totally, I spent a good study experience here. You can meet many international students, even though most of them were from China. In addition, kind teachers would love to help you solve all problems, regardless of life in NZ and study in university, if you would like to ask for help. On the other hand, the time of lecture is short, only 20 hours per week. Therefore, students have many leisure time to manage what you want to evolve.

I was learning English here before I entered my university study in New Zealand in 2015. The Non-IELTS pathway study was incredibly helpful because rather than teaching linguistic skill only, this program is also focusing on application in university life such as how to write academic papers and participant group discussion, which are necessary skills to be survived with various assignments in the university courses.

I love the school!

It’s a very nice school! I used to be a student there. I love the teachers who are full of humor. I love the building srounded by cherry trees. I miss the wonderful time studying English with classmates. I’d like to recommend this school to all the people who want to improve their English. You will learn lots and lots language skills and begin to be familiar with English. Importantly, you will feel more than comfortable when studying there.

Good place for improving your English Skills

I found LU English Language School very useful, as it helped me in terms of speaking and writing skills. I only did English Course for 4 months, but this has helped me to prepare myself entering to university level. The teachers are very supportive, as well as the environment. They always encouraged us to speak English all the time. I really enjoy my time there.
I highly recommend English Language School for those who want to improve their English skills. Don't worry if you have poor English skills, the teachers here are very helpful. Thank You :)

What would you improve about this program?
Provide more fun activities that are intended to improve speaking and writing. E.g. Spelling Bee competition between classes.

I have had great experience with Lincoln University English Language School. During my study, I had a great deal of support from tutors. Particularly, I can learn a lot of academic English skills. Additionally, if I have any problems, such as how to improve my academic writing, I can talk to my tutors easily. All of them are so kind and easy to understand problems that usually happen with foreign students. Moreover, surrounding areas of the LU are so nice, such as library, gym, etc. This means we can spend time on

Why did you choose this program?

Firstly, because Lincoln University is known for its agricultural programs. Moreover, many of my friends recommended Lincoln University's English Language School as one of the best in New Zealand for gaining academic English skills and I hoped to improve my English before enrolling in my PhD studies. Finally, the tuition at Lincoln University was somewhat cheaper than other schools, while maintaining an incredibly high standard of teaching.

What did your program provider assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

Lincoln University English Language School provided a lot of materials related to practicing my English skills. Also, the staff of Lincoln University English Language School provided other academic resources, sharing useful websites for practicing English skills. If I need some help from my teachers, I was able to talk to them anytime I needed. They are willing to help their students without any biases.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

If you are looking to improve your English skills, particularly in an academic sense, Lincoln University English Language School is one of the best for doing so. Set the time aside to pay attention and focus on your studies. Make sure to do the homework assigned and continuously practice your English skills.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

I have class about five days a week. On Monday and Tuesday, class is 9 am - 3 pm, and from 9 am - 12 pm the rest of the week. In class, we cover a lot of different English skills including writing, reading, listening, and speaking. Additionally, each student is assigned to write an academic report.

What was the biggest challenge you faced during your time abroad?

My biggest fear was being able to listen and understand, especially when talking with native English-speakers. Sometimes I can't keep up.

In order to overcome this, I joined clubs to make local friends and participated in community activities. I also visited Christchurch and talked with locals on walks through Hagley Park. I kept in contact with the people I met and used those opportunities to practice my listening skills.

Patrick is the Academic Coordinator for English Language at Lincoln University. He has worked in a variety of sectors (high schools, tertiary institutions) and taught international students, refugees, and migrants from a diverse range of countries. He loves meeting people, regardless of where they come from, going hiking, and watching movies.

What is your favorite travel memory?

A number of years ago I had the opportunity to travel to Papua New Guinea. It has over 800 languages. I was going there on behalf of Lincoln University to do some English language testing.

To get from the capital city Port Moresby to a mining town called Kiunga I had to fly over dense tropical forests. The view from the plane was amazing. The local people were very welcoming.

My lasting impression was talking to the students after the test. Their hunger for education was something that I had not experienced before. There was a group of people who had walked for three days through dense forests to try and join our test. It was a humbling experience and made me realize how easy it is to take getting a good education for granted.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

In my role as Academic Coordinator, I have been able to understand and appreciate different parts of Lincoln University.

Throughout this time, I have been in contact with lecturers and supervisors from various departments such as Agribusiness to Food Science to Landscape Architecture. The amazing people and the research that they do have broadened my own knowledge. It is because of their work and enthusiasm that I am able to bring this knowledge into our English language program.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

One of the major comments I get from ex-students is how thankful they are that they did our course. Some tell me how other students ask them how to write in an academic style or want help doing assignments.

I tell our students that they need to be active learners, not passive ones. By doing this they become experts at what they do.

So when I hear that ex-students are assisting others, it means I have done a great job! Some of our students have gone on to get great jobs in New Zealand and even become staff at the university.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

The English language program at Lincoln is unique because it is part of the university. If you go to some institutions, English language is delivered outside the university. However, at Lincoln, English language is a division of our university. This means we are connected to the university departments. Therefore, the English Language staff work directly with other university staff to provide the best possible service when you study there.

Also, once students are enrolled they become full Lincoln University students. This means you have access to the same facilities like the library and recreation center as any other student, regardless of your length of study.

You can even join university clubs like the hiking club and get heavily discounted deals on activities around the Canterbury region.
