Studying in New Zealand

I really enjoyed the experiences I was able to have by studying abroad in New Zealand through CCIS. It gave me an opportunity to travel and explore a new country with other people who were excited to see all of the unique experiences this country had to offer. My tip would be to find as much time as you can to explore the country you are studying in. Academics are important, but this is a unique opportunity to explore and learn first-hand about another country. Make the most of it! Try to reach out and make friends with people from the host country, they may be able to show you places or events that other international students may not know about.

What would you improve about this program?
CCIS wasn’t super communicative with me, so maybe doing better to clarify just how involved CCIS will be during the program or more clearly communicating any help or services they have to offer students in their programs.

My Time in Moscow

My time in Moscow was a great experience. I spent 4 days a week, 3.5 hours a day studying Russian and I absolutely loved it. The weekend and weekday excursions were also very instructing and fun. The opportunity to live in Russia has been a great eye opener to how different the world is from the United States and has definitely given me a new perspective. From this experience I have made good friends and would recommend to everyone to study abroad.

What would you improve about this program?
More inclusion with Russian students.

Grateful

To study abroad more than immerse me into a new culture, it helps me know a new side of me. It was an excellent experience, I comprehended the cultural roots of my country, Venezuela; and I was able to explore being a student in a different country. Now that I am back home, I am able to see how much I have changed; I have a new view of what is to be living and how grateful we have to be in our everyday.
Since the first moment, it was an adventure, I was moving into a new continent without knowing how special Seville going to become after living the experience. Personally, it was my first time traveling on my own; I knew that moment that I had to be very responsible all the time and break my comfort zone. I was very excited because I didn't even know my roommate or my host-mother were or look like (I only contacted them through email twice before going there). I tried to have a new taste of the sense of exploring through studying a semester in a new place.
The program that I worked with was perfect in all conditions, from pre-departure until we finished the program. Before, they explained every single detail of the lifestyle and how a student can be involved in the Spanish culture very easily. I had kind of an idea, but It wasn't clear until I went there. What caught my attention from the first moment was how passionate the staff works in the program, they are very organized, detailed and I was able to notice how much time they spend in their day into the program, always with the best attitude and showing love in their activities. They gave me a warm welcome and made me feel like home, I was very comfortable and you can trust them with the eyes closed. They offered a bunch of activities for students and it helped me to get knowledge about Spanish lifestyle and history. Some of them were city tours, field trips, cultural visits, internships, volunteering, dance classes, cooking classes, etc. I enjoyed all the activities and I learned how to see the things from life with a different perspective.
Where I stayed was in a student residencia, I lived with a host-mother and a roommate. We all come from different cultures, my host-mother was Spanish, my roommate American and I am Venezuelan. I love that they are part of my experience in Seville, we shared and I learned from them. My host mother is an amazing person, she is the sweetest woman I have ever met, she is a very special person to me. My host-mother is very smart and is the kind of person that you can have a deep conversation with. She explained me very detailed every single aspect of Spanish culture, I really enjoyed talking with her about history and art. She is a happy person who knows how to enjoy life and take advantage of the minutes that life gives us. I used to talk to her before going to bed, it helped me to think about what I really want to achieve in life, inspire me to take rest and start a new day. She is a very peculiar person with an explosive personality and an extraordinary mentality. On another hand, my roommate was a very nice girl, all the moment made me feel comfortable. We respected each other spaces, she became very close and we learned from each other.
As a student, I was taking classes in two different organizations, International College of Seville and the University of Seville. I felt motivated all the time with the classes, it helped to understand deeper the Spanish culture and I was lucky to have the professors from the program, they are inspirational people. I had a good relationship with them and more than a lecture taught in the class, every class was a lesson of life. The course content was excellent, they made us understand the topics and how it is reflected today. I was privileged to have them as a professor because they showed us the role model in life in their own way and with wonderful personalities. It was very grateful to go to class, I knew that each day going to be different. You have responsibilities as a student, but the program’s structure doesn’t make you feel frustrated or stressed; they make you enjoy while you are learning. I think that is the most effective way to learn and comprehend what is around us.
I really enjoy every second of the program, the time goes fast and you should take advantages to explore. This program is designed to break the comfort zone and don’t be afraid from the first moment. Exploring here means to see your surrounding and get to know more about yourself. I had the opportunity to know new places inside and outside Spain, compare cultures, met new people, understand different perspectives; and experience new things. For me to study abroad helped me take a breath from the routine I had at home, it showed me that we need to do what we love; in our every day, we need to be around people who appreciate and inspire us; and each day counts if we want to work for our goals. Anything is impossible to achieve and for me to study abroad was a goal I had in my life, and know I came true that dream. To resume my experience with few words is almost impossible, I can only define it with to be grateful for our life.

What would you improve about this program?
It is perfect the way it is.

A Leap Around the World!

I am currently studying at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. I've been abroad since early February and I get back late June, so I will have spent the semester (5 months) abroad.

My experience abroad has been an amazing one, I've met the best people and instantly found friends that I hope to know for life. I've had the opportunity to take unique classes and travel all around the South Island of New Zealand. Over a three-week mid semester break I road-tripped, camped, and even traveled to Australia! On these trips I got to hike mountains, visit wineries, swim in the ocean, snorkel with hundreds of fish, pet kangaroos, hold koalas, paddle board and explore all things outdoors! New Zealand culture is laid back and always down for an adventure!

While abroad I have had the most amazing experience, through getting out of my comfort zone I have received opportunities to grow in ways I hadn’t realized I could. Immersing myself in a new way of life and getting to meet people from all around the world has been an incredible journey and something that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Traveling half way around the world to New Zealand was one of the best decisions that I have made and if I were to do it again I wouldn’t change a thing. Everyone should study abroad, it connects you to the rest of the world in a completely new way. Being here has given me new life perspectives and has changed the way I see the world, allowing me to make life long friendships with people that feel like family- people I would have never known had I not taken this amazing opportunity to see the world.

AMAZING study abroad experience

Studying abroad at The International College of Seville was one of the best experiences of my life. Not only was all of the staff extremely helpful and friendly, but the program worked to build a very close community where I made lifelong friends. The school is located in a great area of Seville, which is one of the most incredible cities in Andalucia, and I had the most amazing host mom (hi Isabel). ICS had wonderful teachers who wanted to see you succeed and they also offered the opportunity to go to the Universidad de Sevilla to study advanced Spanish courses. This program included a lot of trips and city visits. If you are looking to study abroad in Spain and have the time of your life - CCIS at The International College of Seville is the place to be!

Why did you choose this program?

ICS's program is very complete and helps the students to get involved in the new culture in an easy way. Being far away is difficult to know how the program really offers and how it works, but with ICS it was a problem. From the first moment, they caught my attention. I was evaluating my possibilities in different programs, but ICS was my number one option.

It was in a good location, Seville has a great influence in history as we know today, art is represented in every single corner of the city and the cities have a great cultural diversity. They have excellent reviews, I had the opportunity to meet few students who went the semester before I assisted and they were in love with everything. It is an excellent program in a wonderful location and with the best people that help you make your experience unique and special.

What did your program provider assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

The program provider was very detailed in the program's aspects from the beginning until the end. They answer you all the questions you have with the best attitude and always trying to help the students. They explain to you the application process step by step and give you a hand with the aspects you are struggling with. They are comprehensive people and very kind, it is lovely how helpful they are. I had a very good relationship with the program provider and communicate with them never was a problem. I had a great experience with the program provider from home and the one located in Seville, both were very understanding and helpful.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

It is a great opportunity to know new cultures and a new side of you. If you have the opportunity just go for it, it is incredible how much knowledge you will get and the way you will appreciate life with a different perspective. Art is reflected in all shapes, in the streets, in the monuments, in how the people are educated and their point of view of life.

Be conscious of every single minute, it is very valuable because the time goes fast. In a blink, you are back to the airport taking the flight back home. Life is about details and it is clearly expressed with this experience. You are the one who makes it special, it counts when you are detailed and appreciate the people that are around you. It is a challenge to immerse you into a new lifestyle and the same time it is the most grateful experience.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

It is very dynamic, I was very motivated to start a new day. I am the kind of person who likes to start a day early, I was able to go to the International College of Seville in the morning for my classes; and then, in the afternoon I used to go to University of Seville for the other courses I was taking. I used to visit new places, like monuments, churches, visit parks, see the sunset by the river, meet new people, and other cities.

I like to be involved in different activities, for that reason I was very involved with the ones that ICS offered, I really enjoyed the dance classes (it were twice a week), cooking classes (once a week) and the internship opportunities. At the end of the day, I loved to dinner with my housemother, we talked so much about different topics. It was a regular weekday, on weekends it was pretty different, I liked to walk around town all day and explore new places.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

I had few things that I did know I I will deal with when I was planning to study abroad. First, how I will deal with time management, breaking my comfort zone, adapting myself to the new culture and the way I would be independent.

I tried to be organized and I had a list of the things that I wanted to do; also with google maps, I located the places that I wanted to visit. It helped me to complete my checklist, I had to identify my priorities and responsibilities, it was the best way to manage my time correctly.
I had to be open-minded about the different things that study abroad offers you and don't be afraid to try new things, breaking my comfort zone includes being responsible for my acts. Now that I am back home I see how that helped me to improve in my every day, also It made me be conscious of how important is to value you acts and times that life gives you.

Things to do before traveling?

I recommend to pack lightly, you will bring a lot of things back home. You will notice that you do not need so many things to live perfect, with a pair of walking shoes you are good to explore and feel like you are living. I was able to notice that sometimes we depend on things that are not necessary, enjoy moments and people who are around you.

If you are planning to travel, I recommend you to buy the tickets as soon as possible, they are cheaper and as a student to save money is awesome. Also, ask for student discounts, they have in cultural visits great deals for students. Used Pinterest to find places to visit and the days that are for free. As an art and history lover, before traveling I used to study the destination history, influence, art and unique places. It makes it easier to travel; because you know the history of the things we appreciate with our eyes.
