Flying English School

Why choose Flying English School?

Flying English School is a boutique English language school for young children in downtown Shanghai. The school was founded in early 2015 by two mothers, a former chemical engineer/entrepreneur and a young business consultant, who were both unhappy with the quality of after-school education in Shanghai. They teamed up with an education consultant and decided to improve the way students were taught. We now have a team of 25 staff and 400+ students, and will open a new center in Hong Kou district in late 2019.

In addition to English (ESL & Language Arts) classes, we also offer STEM classes and arts and crafts. We are currently looking for enthusiastic and ambitious people for our English language centers in Shanghai. The successful candidate will have a passion to see children (ages 4-12) learn in a fun and friendly environment. Beginners and experienced teachers may apply!

Truly the best employer I've been with

I'm in my 3rd contract with Flying English, and it's been amazing to be a part of this family. Everyone here is treated with respect, and our opinions are valued. The management here supports us greatly in training, teaching-related matters, and things outside of school, such as sending us supplies and helping with personal matters, ensuring we're all well taken care of during the lockdowns.

From managing the day-to-day, to issues from the covid pandemic, I think their actions speak volumes with regard to their teaching/management philosophy, which translates to improved quality of teaching for the students and a great experience for the teachers. Like many others entering a new country and field, I believe a bad first experience will turn the passion for teaching sour, while a good experience in contrast would provide the energy and fuel to continue forward. And Flying English definitely belongs in the latter half here. My overall experience here is nothing short of excellent, and I highly recommend this school, especially for those looking for new beginnings teaching English in Shanghai.

Pros
  • Excellent relationship between teachers, management and staff
  • Great training and support for both teaching related and personal matters
  • Room to achieve good balance between work and life

Best first job

I enjoyed the TEFL course a lot. I met great friends, learnt a lot which I was able to easily put into practice once I had a job. I was able to find a job immediately after finishing the course. I still have all the materials which have been useful throughout the two plus years I ended up staying in Shanghai. The course leaders were friendly and available to answer any questions I had regarding Shanghai, teaching or the course itself. I’d definitely recommend to any friends that were thinking of coming to Shanghai in the future.

Great place to work in an amazing city!

This is a great company that offers competitive pay,but best of all a warm, familial working environment. Most of the staff are friends and there is a small divide between Chinese and foreign staff. There is also great support from the owners both professionally and personally, as they understand the difficulties of being a foreigner. The class sizes are small and you have the opportunity to work with the same students for quite some time. You also have the opportunity to have variety in terms of different classes so that you aren't teaching the same 2 lessons over and over again.I know some folks who work in schools where they feel like mindless robots, and this is not the case at Flying English.I'm personally very satisfied with the work load and the autonomy given.I get to infuse my personal teaching style, which can make it great fun.I Really enjoyed my time here.

Flying English Flew Away With Our Hearts

When we first came to China, we weren't planning on staying in Shanghai for more than a month. Two years later, we're still in Shanghai working at Flying English and about to sign a contract for a third year.
The school is very small, now with only one location. The owners literally sit a few meters away and are very open and friendly. They go out of their way to make us feel comfortable and have gone above and beyond helping us navigate the difficulties of settling down in a new country and new culture.
The classes are great, too. Classes are kept small, so you really get the chance to get to know and bond with the students. It's been great to watch so many develop their English and go from barely knowing anything to having full conversations. We get a lot of freedom with how we teach, and as long as you cover the basics you can tailor the classes to what the students need and to your own teaching style.
Overall, I would recommend Flying English to anyone who wants to actually teach and do more than just be a pretty foreign face. It's a great school in a great city!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
When we first got to Shanghai, we rented an Airbnb. Our hostess took us out for hotpot, where we got to taste goose liver, tripe, and pigs brains. The pig brains were actually pretty good!

Great school / wonderful place to work at / my experience

I love working in Flying English. The working environment is very positive and friendly. My co-workers are very helpful and nice to me. They are inspiring and hard-working people. If you like to be in an international team and love teaching language, then this might be the place to start. And you can explore Shanghai , China and Asian where the foods are delicous and full of adventures.
They have developed a pretty good program for the kids. The teaching material has been taught to many kids and proved that it is quite effective. If the students follow the program from an early age, they could be an advance speaker in English. There will be a full training course before taking over the classes. My mentors are great! They are very nice people and help me a lot along the way.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Before I work in Flying English, I thought children should play and have fun in their early age. After I saw so many lovely and smart kids in our shcool. It changed my view of pre-shcool education. Children can be creative and learn lots of thing at the same time. It depends on the teachers teaching style. It really gets me rethink about what's the best way to teach and what expereince a teacher can bring to a kid.
