Yes, I recommend this program

I've had the opportunity to do an internship in this beautiful country. It was an amazing experience, both to learn about a whole new culture, while also be a part of a tourist agency.

It is a very cheap country to live in and the people living there are very friendly and welcoming. I had the possibility to go on different tours to visit well-known places in Quito, Ecuador. If you get the chance to go on any tour I would definitely recommend visiting Cotopaxi and Mindo, those places are one of a kind.

If you're a young student and want to be a part of the night life, DO NOT bring your phone. First of all, there is no wifi in the clubs and the locals often picks out outsiders to rob, which unfortunately happened to me twice. I learned from my mistakes and I recommend others to do the same and not bring their phones with them. It is also a good idea to take a copy of your passport and bring it with you aswell.

GET Ecuador is a really great company and the director is the most kind and caring person I've ever met. They are really helpful and has a lot of tips if you want to find a great place to eat, place to visit amongst other things.

Being a part of this program has helped my improve my Spanish significantly, I've made a ton of new friends, both inside the company I worked at but also in the discoteques in the center of Quito. Other than that this internship has given me opportunities in the future I wouldn't have being able to have if I had done an internship in my home country Denmark.
The internship has also made me more mature, social, outgoing and curious about experiencing other great countries, both vacation- and workwise.

Muchas gracias por todo y buena suerte en el futuro!

Best regards, Jeppe

It was a learning experience for me, which I would not be without. I'm incredibly pleased to have experienced Ecuador.
It was the best time in my life, filled with memories I will never forget. I urge everyone who has the opportunity to take the opportunity and get a great experience.
I met a lot of exciting new people during my stay.
I have nothing bad to add, it was an amazing experience.

Kent Mathiasson

Kent Mathiasson is a 45 year old male from Sweden who volunteered in Galapagos from October 8 to October 27. After spending 13 years in school, he started to work at his parent's supermarket which he eventually took over and ran for 11 years. After 25 years of working, Mathiasson is now ready to start studying again.

Why did you decide to volunteer abroad with GET Ecuador in the Galapagos?

I booked my trip through volontarresor in Sweden and they are the ones who contacted you for the trip to Galapagos. I'm glad they used you because you (through Karla) really took care of me. With phone call just to check in so that everything was okay and fixed when something didn't work out for me. So thank you so much. If I'm ever going back to Ecuador and need any help I will contact you.

Describe your day to day activities as a volunteer.

My day as a volunteer took place on San Cristobal island up in the mountains in a reforestation place run by Jatun Sacha. Several days we cut down Mora (Blackberry a plant that don't belong on the Galapagos). But sadly it didn't rain on my two weeks there so we couldn't plant anything instead we improved the place with a volleyball court and a campfire. Not really what I expected but I didn't mind. We had a lot of fun there.

What made this volunteer abroad experience unique and special?

The one thing that mad this trip so unique and special was that it was on the Galapagos. If I would describe paradise with one word it would be Galapagos.

How has this experience impacted your future?

This trip has made a huge impact on me and my future. I have thought of become a vet for a time and during this trip a decide to go further with the plans. Just a few days ago I sent in the applications. I see if I get in.

Tell us a little about GET Ecuador and your role at the company.

Karla in the Galapagos

Karla: GET (GrowExperienceTravel) Ecuador is a local Cultural Exchange Organization founded by professionals whose passion is to share the amazing natural regions and culture that Ecuador mainland and the Galapagos Islands offer. We believe that living abroad is a unique opportunity of cultural and personal understanding.

Our team has worked on industry related businesses for the last seven years gaining invaluable experience. We are specialized in volunteer and travel programs and we see each one of our participants and groups as a family with different needs, dreams, and expectations.

I graduated in the Tourism Management field at UCT (Universidad de Especialidades Turisticas)- Quito, have more than 10 years of experience with travel and exchange programs and I believe that travelling and discovering new places is a truly lifetime opportunity everyone should have.

My role at GET Ecuador is to create new programs, and ways to promote them, working together with the team to offer quality volunteer and travel experiences in Ecuador.

How did you get involved in the volunteer industry?

Karla: Since my last year of high school in the United States, I have enjoyed learning about different countries, when I came back to Ecuador I knew that my passion was on the Tourism field and to show all the amazing natural and cultural attractions my country offers. Since the second year of University studies I have got involved on the industry guiding and working on the operations department. Five years ago, I have also being involved on marketing area.

What makes GET Ecuador unique?

Karla with a group

Karla: What makes us unique is basically: our team and philosophy. Our team works nonstop, aiming to develop interesting itineraries and programs. We pride ourselves on promoting innovative activities and creating lifetime experiences while still helping our participants to grow-learn, and experience Ecuador from a completely new perspective.

Our philosophy: We believe that every company, no matter how big or small, could contribute to making the world a better place. It's hard to label any travel organization as an ecologic institution; after all, tourism is all about going to places, which requires transportation (most of the times by plane, for instance) that pollutes the environment. However, sustainability isn't only about environmental issues, but also social sustainability.

We work towards environmental and social conservation contributing with local communities around the country.

In your experience, what characteristics make a good international volunteer?

Karla: A good international volunteer can be defined as a person who is motivated and has a very good attitude towards new environments and a culture, someone who is able to share his/her own ideas with others and is moved by a passion to Grow Experience and Travel!

What does the future hold for GET Ecuador?

Karla: We feel confident and optimistic for the future; we will continue to develop programs that contribute to sustainable development of local projects and give participants a lifetime experience.
