The Maisha Project

Why choose The Maisha Project?

The Maisha Project is a woman-founded, Kenyan-led nonprofit that has worked continuously in western Kenya since 2006, delivering community-led solutions across education, health, family support, economic empowerment, and environmental restoration. Programs are anchored at an enclosed, solar-powered campus near Kisumu that integrates classrooms, school feeding and nutrition facilities, agroforestry and reforestation plots, community health services, and training spaces into a single, operating ecosystem. Over nearly two decades, Maisha has hosted more than 1,200 mission participants who serve alongside Kenyan staff in structured education, medical outreach, family care, climate-smart agriculture, and community development initiatives. Volunteers are embedded within long-standing local systems, supported by required training and clear safeguards, ensuring engagement strengthens community capacity and continuity.

A Great Location and Overall Experience!

My son was living in Kisumu during his break between undergrad and graduate school, volunteering with The Maisha Project. My family and I traveled to Kisumu for two weeks to volunteer at the community clinic, and it was an immersive and eye-opening experience. I would highly recommend it to anyone, especially those who have never been to Kenya before. We were able to not only work alongside the medical staff at the clinic but also meet and interact with the students at the academy and travel outside the campus to meet with folks in the surrounding village area.
