One month in San José

I can never thank the great folks at CEA CAPA, La Universidad Veritas, and my wonderful hosts enough for my incredible education abroad in Costa Rica.

My home university, FHSU - Fort Hays State University in Hays Kansas - allowed me to use the program to finish my medical Spanish degree.

CEA CAPA provided a wonderful environment to live and learn for my stay. I simply fell in love with my hosts. They were the sweetest people. They were newlyweds and shared their home with me as though we'd known each other all our lives. Laura, Diego and I had no trouble communicating, understanding, and laughing with each other for my entire stay. Their dauchsund Ursula was a sweetheart I'll never forget. And Laura's meals were to die for! (I love fruits and boy does Costa Rica have an incredibly diverse supply!) When they gave me Father's day gifts, I was stunned with joy. What great hosts!

Profesora Ismene from Veritas was one of the finest educators I have ever had and as someone with a pharmacist's degree, I have seen a lot of teachers. She was one of the best I ever saw. Gentle yet strict and disciplined in the most wonderful way. Her kindness and respect was contagious. Her assignments were appropriately challenging, always educational for everyone. She involved every student in the class in a masterful way. And I loved how she simply talked in Spanish until I understand stood her. We shared great conversations together.

Thank you CEA CAPA for allowing me into to your great program. I loved experiencing the Costa Rican culture. I always felt safe and welcomed as a stranger in their beautiful country!

What was your funniest moment?
The last day i was in Costa Rica, we went to the beach in Jacó. The beach was spectacualar. Then the monkeys descended from the trees, stole potato chips and hurried back up the beautiful trees where they swung from branch to branch. What a day!

BARCELONA LCI

I can say that this is one of the best experience is in my life. I’m so grateful I got to do it alongside my best friend too living in a new city in a new country was such a rewarding experience. I learned so much about myself and the learning is just so different over there. I never have gained that much knowledge that short of a period time I would recommend this program to anyone and everyone it’s not only fun and
Exciting but so rewarding. We did things like cooking classes, wine, tours, day, trips, and hikes. Every day was a new adventure. Every weekend was a new country visited. I have never enjoyed something so much more in my life and I am so grateful I was able to do this.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I could do this all over again, the only thing I would change is I would go for a full semester instead of two months in the summer, I wish I got more time to travel and hang out with all the people I met and explore the city even deeper.
Pros
  • Safe
  • So much to do
  • Easy to travel out of

Spanish Study Abroad in Costa Rica

Overall, my experience has been great!!! From the people that I met here to all the weekend trips I went on, everything was excellent. However, my housing situation was a little annoying in the beginning since our home stay lady would barely talk to us in Spanish and the whole point of me studying here was to talk to families here and learn more each and every day. It has definitely gotten better now though and I appreciate all the support I got from veritas and my teachers. Special shout out to Jonathan and his dad because they have done a lot for all the students of the university of Georgia!!!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I overpacked because we did not know what the weather would be like but to all the future travelers, I would like to say that ITS HOT here and that they do not need 7 long sleeve shirts. Only 1-2 is good for weekend trips but no long pants or long sleeve shirts.
Pros
  • Nature (trees, animals, mountains, clean water on the beaches)
  • Food
  • Rain (reminds me of India)
Cons
  • Rats and lizards
  • Dogs barking
  • Cat calling from random strangers

Review

The staff were very warm and welcoming people. There were lots of differences within the Costa Rican culture compared to American culture. It was exciting to see new things and learn different things I’ve never even thought of before. Some points were difficult but it was all expected with the new environment. There’s not many things I’d change about my time spent in Costa Rica. Overall it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and it’s helped me in furthering my life and career goals. Pura vida!

An experience everyone should have

As a college student who has had a non-traditional experience, the study abroad program in Universisdad Veritas deserves credit for their highly organized program. Everything from the excursions down to the home-stays made the experience worthwhile.

What would you improve about this program?
The only problem was the miscommunication with my roommate and I's return flight pick up. Other than that, everything went smoothly.

I would love to meet with you and tell you more about why we are your strategic partner in the world of Study Abroad.

What is your favorite travel memory?

When I was 11 years old (2001), I had the opportunity to participate in a two-week exchange program in Paducah, Kentucky. This experience was life-changing. Being exposed to a different culture and language sparked my interest in learning more about other cultures and continuing to improve my English, which is what led me to work in the Study Abroad program today.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

I have grown significantly both personally and professionally. In 2014, VERITAS University gave me the opportunity to begin a professional career as a professor in the Study Abroad program, providing my first experiences in the field. Later, I became the Academic Coordinator and then the Student Experience Leader. This latter role allowed me to connect more closely with new generations and learn about their interests, aspirations, and dreams. In 2016, I achieved further growth within the company by becoming the Partner Relations Specialist for the Study Abroad program, which has become a dream job. This career path has helped me grow a lot, and above all, I've learned more about the university education systems in Costa Rica and the United States.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

My course is on International Relations in Latin America. We cover the history and political evolution of the continent. My goal is to make a important impact in the students life. My class had a strong impact on this student, who now shares with me about her political activism and human rights advocacy.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

Oh God, this is a very difficult question. I would choose two: studying environmental science in Costa Rica, the fieldtrips has a incredible contact with nature, animals, and environmental protection; and in Barcelona, Arts and Business, with all the experience that this world capital has to offer.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

The Diversity on Campus. LCI VERITAS is a university with a small but extremely diverse student population. With a strong focus on design, you'll find students majoring in Architecture, Digital Animation, Film and TV, Photography, Interior Design, Fashion Design, Product Design, Advertising Design, Business Administration, and Marketing, totaling approximately 2,000 students. We host the Study Abroad program, which enriches the university culturally and academically. This program offers courses in:

Arts, Design, and Humanities
Business, Communication, and Marketing
Biology, Environment, and Science
Health & Psychology
Social Science
Spanish Linguistics and Literature
Study with Locals
Pre-Veterinary Semester.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

For me, positive leadership is the most important factor in a company's success. A good leader always prioritizes the common good over the individual, and this humanizes the company, fostering a connection with its employees and building loyalty with its clients. And in this LCI VERITAS has been doing a great work.
