Did your internship offer any kind of stipend? How much did you budget for the semester?

My internship site did not offer any stipend. However, The Intern Group did give us an Oyster Card to move around the city.

I wasn't expecting the internship to provide any kind of compensation, but when I arrived I learned I would be getting 50 pounds per week in attempts to help cover food costs. I probably wound up spending 75 pounds per week, but there were definitely other expenses due to time spent traveling on weekends and after the internship.

I never received any stipend from my internship although if my office would go out after work, I rarely had to pay for drinks or snacks.

In terms of budgeting, I planned to spend about a thousand US dollars per month. London is rather expensive and I'm sort of a foodie, so I planned my budget around my expectations. For example, I gave myself about $500/month in food and the other $500 would go to groceries/drinks/shopping/entertainment. I did well with that budget. But I also had a travel budget too. Luckily flights are relatively cheap in Europe and a hostel last minute can even be about €40 a night. I think in total going around to several countries I spent around $600 for room and board.

Fortunately, the Intern Group covers your Oyster card which allows for public transportation everywhere inside of London. From talking with Londoner's this is a benefit of a few hundred dollars.

As mentioned before, London is notoriously expensive but the experience is invaluable. I'm more than happy to answer any more questions about my time abroad or with the Intern Group.

Interns with the Intern Group do not get paid anything - it is a completely voluntary internship. I went to England for mine and realizing the British pound is very expensive when compared to the CDN and U.S. Dollar, I budgeted accordingly. As far as a specific number, I can't quite remember however as a guideline, transportation is covered (for the most part - unless you venture outside the city boundaries or use taxis for personal use) and there are several events paid for by the company for interns to attend. Food and shopping were my primary spending sources. Food is very pricy in London compared to Canada. I frequented the supermarket often spending about 60-70£ per week (I went for 8weeks). Also you can get very good train sales to Paris or flights to Scotland. These figures are available through the Euro Rail website or Airline companies.

No stipend was given for my particular internship. I was in London for 8 weeks and took $5000 to cover all of my expenses.
