What exactly does it mean by exchange?

What exactly does it mean by exchange? Will someone be staying at my house, as well?
Also, how long should I apply in advance to my trip to Japan? A few months? A year? Two years?

The 'exchange' portion of the title indicates the cultural exchange (two-way transfer of knowledge, customs, etc. between participant and community) taking place rather than the traditional 1:1 exchange that we have come to know in the study abroad profession.
