Hello!
While this program encourages prior experience, those who don't know Japanese won’t have to worry, based on my experience during this program. Immersing yourself in the culture and being exposed to the language on a daily basis is one of the most effective and fastest ways of learning a language. The program focuses on taking Japanese courses, depending on your level, for a week out of the month you will be staying. Other than that, you will acquire skills to overcome language barriers which you may be faced with, where you get to engage with your group as well.
This program also includes staying with a host family, whether you will be staying with one who knows English, you will be able to connect in other ways using the prior classes and techniques you have acquired during the trip. Though, if you still have concerns, you can express them to your leader or others in your group.

So, you’re never alone in your worries as you and your group connect through the shared experience of the culture and obstacles you come across. This chance to explore outside one’s comfort zone is a great experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in Japan, regardless of their experience with the language.
