Best experience ever

Studying abroad in Prague was honestly the best experience I've ever had. The city is so gorgeous and way too easy to fall in love with. Our program directors were so welcoming and enthusiastic about us being there and did everything they could to ensure we had a good time while also experiencing Czech culture. The other students in the program are now some of my favorite people and will be lifetime friends, which is another reason why I loved being there so much. The atmosphere of Prague is like no other and I would highly recommend doing this program.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Make everything a positive experience and talk to everyone! Everyone is super sweet and is most likely also looking for friends so don't be nervous. Even if something goes wrong take it as a learning experience and move on to make sure you're making your time abroad worthwhile and fun.
Pros
  • the city
  • the food (so many vegetarian options)
  • easy to travel to other places!

Interning in Florence was the Highlight of My College Career!

I just completed interning in Florence, Italy with AIFS this past semester and I would do it all over again if I could! I loved my boss at my internship, however, I feel like the placement could have been slightly better to help me learn and develop professionally. The position would have been perfect for someone with a beginner level experience but I had previously done 2 very similar jobs so there wasn’t a lot of room for me to grow in the position. There were 10 of us total in the fall program and each of us had different placements that fit the different personalities so there are a lot of internship options and they do try to pick the best fit for every intern. If you’re wanting to go abroad and gain work experience I would absolutely recommend the program!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I really embraced the food and culture in Italy and as a self proclaimed foodie I used the opportunity to try new restaurants all over Florence and try new foods I wouldn’t normally try. The most “surprising” thing I ate was probably pork neck and tripe. The best thing I ate was a truffle and sausage pasta that I had to go back and eat multiple times!
Pros
  • Amazing Food
  • Becoming more Independent
  • Gaining work experience
Cons
  • Internship placement didn’t help me learn

Berlin 2023

Berlin is a really wonderful city to be living in, there is lots to do and experience even if you don't speak German . The Program though AIFs offers very nice structured activities but also gives you plenty of time and space to do your own thing and travel around both Berlin and Europe. The AIFs staff was very supportive. I didn't particularly enjoy my academic experience at Humboldt, there were a few good classes and few really awful ones, and if I was given the chance I would probably pick the Freie Universität program

Sydney with AIFS is amazing

The Sydney program with AIFS is fantastic; I would recommend it to everyone. I participated in their internship program in 2023 and couldn't have asked for a better experience. Sydney is an extremely safe city with friendly people. Traveling is easy, and there are so many things to do in Sydney and Australia. Our Australian mom for the program, Andrea, is just as amazing and made the experience even better. As for the internship, I loved my experience working for the finance team in a non-profit. Also, the housing is very nice and in a great location.

AIFS Abroad Florence Internship - Great program!

I decided to participate in the AIFS Florence Internship program as a recent college graduate. I wasn't quite ready to dive into the workforce and I wanted to travel, so this gave me the perfect opportunity to live abroad while still gaining professional experience. I definitely recommend this program to someone who is looking to experience living abroad but still wants to build their resume at the same time. However, it's important to expect that your main priority during this INTERNSHIP program should be showing up to work and not just prioritizing traveling/leisure, so be ready to work!!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Like I mentioned in my review, be ready to work!! This program is amazing and they offer plenty of opportunities/events to have fun, but at the end of the day, this is an internship, so your main priority is to show up for work. You will have time for travel/exploring on weekends!
Pros
  • Gaining work experience while living abroad
  • Lots of opportunity to travel within Italy and out of country
  • Lots of opportunity to meet people and make new friends
Cons
  • Housing is Italy is not always the best quality
  • Culture shock
  • Not getting paid for working full time

NOCCCD Faculty Review

My colleague and I have had the pleasure of accompanying 21 amazing students on a 3 month journey that will most certainly change them for the rest of their lives. Thank you to AIFS for sharing Rome with us and attending to every detail that made this an experience that will live with us eternally. The AIFS Rome center staff were excellent in providing impactful excursions, extra-curricular courses, and ensuring that all of us were well informed and provided for in every part of our journey. I only wish it was a year-long program.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Try and do something new every day, even if it scares you.
Pros
  • AIFS Rome Staff
  • AIFS extracurricular activities and excursions
  • The food and culture!
Cons
  • Program should be a year, not a semester.

Post grad internship experience

During my undergrad I never had the chance to study abroad or do an internship in my field of study. AIFS allowed me to not only intern in my desired field, but also travel abroad to an amazing country. The process was incredibly simple, I was able to pay for the program out of pocket throughout the months leading up to it, and I even received scholarship as a post grad! This experience boosted my resume and prepared me for my new work life after college! I met the most amazing friends, and the program did an excellent job setting us up with roommates in the program.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Always try new things everyday day, even if that means going to a new bakery. Ask questions and talk to locals, you will learn a lot more!
Pros
  • Resume builder
  • amazing friends
  • Very happy day to day life
Cons
  • Wish I could have stayed for 6 months
  • sometimes there was a lack of work in the internship (But I always found ways to enhance my work experience)

AIFS is super unorganized and do not recommend for internships

I'm so disappointed that I must leave a bad review, but I must share my experience. AIFS has been so unorganized from the start. Because of their miscommunication and disorganization, I almost did not receive academic credit for my internship. Also, our emergency coordinator SUCKED; the two times we had emergencies (locked out of our apartment for hours at night and a hospitalized roommate), she tried to blame us! I would NOT recommend AIFS bc they've caused me trouble before, during, and after.

What would you improve about this program?
Actually listening to the concerns of their students!! None of my roommates/friends I made during the program felt supported by AIFS.
Pros
  • Nice housing
  • Excursions
  • Meeting people
Cons
  • Hates their students
  • Bad at communication
  • Unorganized

Irreplaceable experience!

I met so many great people during this program. Not only were the other girls in the internship program amazing, but I also created some long-lasting connections with my employers. The AIFS staff were also very helpful and they planned some very fun day trips for the whole group such as wine tasting, biking around Lucca, and a cooking class! I will cherish this experience for the rest of my life as it allowed me to grow emotionally and professionally through all the connections i made with the staff, my peers, and my employers.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I would advise future travelers to be open minded when joining this program. Traveling abroad is not always easy, unexpected situations may occur but it teaches you so much about yourself and life in general. Always keep an open mind and heart especially in Florence. There is so much waiting for you in this small city of beauty!! Take it all in and be patient but persistent.
Pros
  • meeting like-minded people
  • day trips that are planned for you
  • the best food you will ever have
Cons
  • touristy (duh)
  • can't really think of anything
  • people don't pick up after their dogs so watch where you step!

Best time ever

This has been the best time for my friends & I. We all came in not knowing eachother at all and being from different places but have become such close friends. It is normal to be scared or nervous!!! Don’t let that hold you back & this experience is more than worth it. I have made friends in the past 4 months that I can’t imagine I used to not know. There’s plenty of amazing trips here in Australia (imagine snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef!!!) and you get to do it all with the best friends you make here.

Pros
  • Friends
  • Food
  • Beach/nature
Cons
  • Far
