Study Abroad at Edge Hill

Edge Hill University is in the cute little town of Ormskirk. If you’re all about cute storybook towns, this is the place for you. If you’re more of a city person, you may want to spend a lot of your time in nearby cities like Liverpool. I will say the city and the campus can be a bit slow, at least compared to my home city and home university. But, if you’re studying abroad to get some time to yourself and have some time to think, then that’s perfect! The schedule at Edge Hill also allows for some flexible travel time, so if you’re wanting to explore nearby countries, then it’s great! Probably some of my favorite parts about being at Edge Hill were just walking around Ormskirk on the market days, being able to take a slow start to the day just for time to myself. The campus and town really lends itself to that. Overall, I would recommend the program for anyone who wants to take an opportunity to slow down for a bit and explore. I probably wouldn’t recommend it to someone who wants to pursue a lot of projects and be really involved on campus.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I did it all again, I would establish more of a sense of routine. I got very overwhelmed by the amount of free time I had, and I wish I had taken advantage of it by picking up a hobby or exercising more.

Excellent!

I had the most positive experience studying abroad at Edge Hill in the Fall Term of 2018! Ormskirk is a quaint, safe town full of affordable restaurants and pubs walking distance from campus. Campus itself is picturesque with modern facilities for the students. The International Office was extremely supportive throughout my entire experience, both with academic and emotional support. They put on free coach day-trips to cities such as Conwy, Wales, and York, so us international students had the opportunity to see the beauty of the surrounding areas at no expense. The close location to Liverpool provided an excellent experience for me, as I was able to get into the city center by train in about thirty minutes. Because living in Ormskirk was relatively inexpensive, I was able to travel on the weekends via Liverpool Airport, Manchester Airport, and the train. All in all, I had the best time, and would absolutely recommend EHU to any student planning to study abroad.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice for anyone studying at Edge Hill is to sign up for their Global Friends program, where an international student is paired up with an EHU student. Global Friends can answer any questions about the school, the culture, show the international student around campus and Ormskirk- anything! I had such an incredible experience with this, and wound up with a travel buddy friend for life!

study abroad ormskirk with grand valley summer term

edge hill is an approachable, friendly school in a rural setting. it's a great base to explore other regions of the uk and offers a serene atmosphere. the grand valley program offered classes from the stateside university housed within the ormskirk campus so our experience with academics a edge hill was limited. granted, a few of the buildings were heavily used by students, like the dance/bar/laundry space and the international dorms, but, hey, it's a college replete with students living on their own for the first time. especially conducive to studying were several nooks within buildings that offered quietude. this is a fine place to actually connect with other students as it generally is a slower-paced, relaxed campus environment. transportation to the town of ormskirk itself from campus proper is no problem, and it is a sweet, easy train ride away to liverpool. i felt very safe on campus and generally amidst open-minded individuals.

Higher than 10

If I could rate the summer program at Edge Hill for international students higher than a "10," I would. This year's program included trips to Liverpool, Manchester, the Lake District, and Stratford-upon-Avon, among other things, and every detail was carefully planned and carried out so that the students had the most positive experience possible. Beth Spears was a wonderful addition to the International Office staff, and because her time was dedicated to our travel groups, she was able to make sure everything came off without a hitch. I am very grateful for the work of the entire International staff. Our students loved their time at Edge Hill and their experience in the UK, and I am eager to return with another group in 2018. This experience is everything it should be for college students studying away from home: safe, fun, and welcoming, but also adventurous, wide-scoped, and flexible. A high-impact experience!

As a faculty member, the amount of assistance we get from the International Office at Edge Hill and the efficiency and friendliness of their work makes this one of the most attractive programs I have been exposed to.

What would you improve about this program?
It is perfect as it is, flexible enough to meet the needs of very diverse groups.

Amazing once in a lifetime Study Abroad

Edge Hill University was a fantastic host while our American University visited! During our time there was a perfect balance between classroom time at Edge Hill and day excursions to various cities throughout England. The professors were so kind and welcoming each week we attended class. Edge Hill's campus is beautiful, I really enjoyed the campus overall. Our liaison from the international office Beth strived to give us the best study abroad experience possible! She handled all logistics and each day trip was maximize! She worked so hard Meeting all of needs while we were at Edge Hill.

England 2017

My experience was unique because of the Edge Hill staff that hosted the summer program. Beth was amazing at planning everything for us to do and I'm so glad I got the chance to meet her! We got to enjoy tours of Ormskirk and Liverpool. We got to go into different schools and experience what it was like for students to learn in England. My favorite school that we visited was Rowan Park because the teachers were very passionate about helping the students learn real life situations. Also, we had the chance to meet the other groups during a taste testing and sports day. Although I personally thought sports day should have been during the first week students arrived on campus to help them get to know each other. Also, I was so sad that the cereal bars were not included in the meal plan. Even then, the international office was on top of it and provided us with a way to purchase those. Thank you all for an amazing start to the summer, I'm so glad I got the chance to experience 3 weeks in England at Edge Hill!

Parting the Leaves

I had a fantastic time studying at Edge Hill. The university was very welcoming and helpful, they truly wanted us to get involved with the school and feel like apart of the community. Ormskirk was such a cute little town and it truly began to feel like home before we left. Shake It Up is a great place to get a chocolate shake. Horseshoe was a good, cheap bar. Don't go to social, waste of time and 3 pounds. Never went to the gym but heard it was great - wish I would've went swimming though. Beth is cool, she deserves a promotion. GO TO LIVERPOOL A LOT!!! SO MUCH FUN. (Don't listen to them - ride a Lamabana!!)

Great!

I enjoyed this trip a lot! All the field trips were relevant and the staff was extremely helpful. Edge Hill University was a beautiful place, and Ormskirk was extremely safe and friendly. All the students were inclusive and friendly, and I made a lot of friends. The food was slightly lacking, but all college food is. I would never have changed my trip or the campus for anything, and the trails around campus were beautiful. Beth Spears went above and beyond for our group and made us feel welcomed.

Feels like home

This is the the 4th time I've brought a group of students to Edge Hill. Everyone is lovely and extremely helpful. There is a wonderful balance of classes, school visitations and site seeing. This year there were 2 get acquainted activities that were quite helpful. This is a safe and comfortable environment and is convenient to Liverpool, Southport, Manchester, etc. Having Brendan as our primary driver was an extra perk and very much appreciated. Bill Johnson, conducted a marvelous walking tour of Liverpool, a highlight. I look forward to bringing yet another group in 2 years. I miss it when I am not there.

What would you improve about this program?
I think the sports day an get acquainted dinners could be done earlier so that the groups can take advantage of getting to know the other groups. I would have liked to have visited about 2 more secondary schools.

Ready for Round Two!

The experience my students and I had at Edge Hill was unbelievable, from the time we arrived on campus until the time we departed. The staff were amazing and accommodating, and the International Office was staffed with the most competent and kind people you will ever meet! I am planning to return with students again in the future-- no need to shop around for other programs, as this one is top notch!

What would you improve about this program?
The improvements would be minor-- have the sports day event earlier in the program so that students can get to know each other earlier in their time on campus. Get the unicard fixed so that it works to purchase cereal bars. It worked at Starbucks, though, so you can't beat that!
