Study Abroad at Edge Hill

Edge Hill University is in the cute little town of Ormskirk. If you’re all about cute storybook towns, this is the place for you. If you’re more of a city person, you may want to spend a lot of your time in nearby cities like Liverpool. I will say the city and the campus can be a bit slow, at least compared to my home city and home university. But, if you’re studying abroad to get some time to yourself and have some time to think, then that’s perfect! The schedule at Edge Hill also allows for some flexible travel time, so if you’re wanting to explore nearby countries, then it’s great! Probably some of my favorite parts about being at Edge Hill were just walking around Ormskirk on the market days, being able to take a slow start to the day just for time to myself. The campus and town really lends itself to that. Overall, I would recommend the program for anyone who wants to take an opportunity to slow down for a bit and explore. I probably wouldn’t recommend it to someone who wants to pursue a lot of projects and be really involved on campus.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I did it all again, I would establish more of a sense of routine. I got very overwhelmed by the amount of free time I had, and I wish I had taken advantage of it by picking up a hobby or exercising more.

Excellent!

I had the most positive experience studying abroad at Edge Hill in the Fall Term of 2018! Ormskirk is a quaint, safe town full of affordable restaurants and pubs walking distance from campus. Campus itself is picturesque with modern facilities for the students. The International Office was extremely supportive throughout my entire experience, both with academic and emotional support. They put on free coach day-trips to cities such as Conwy, Wales, and York, so us international students had the opportunity to see the beauty of the surrounding areas at no expense. The close location to Liverpool provided an excellent experience for me, as I was able to get into the city center by train in about thirty minutes. Because living in Ormskirk was relatively inexpensive, I was able to travel on the weekends via Liverpool Airport, Manchester Airport, and the train. All in all, I had the best time, and would absolutely recommend EHU to any student planning to study abroad.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice for anyone studying at Edge Hill is to sign up for their Global Friends program, where an international student is paired up with an EHU student. Global Friends can answer any questions about the school, the culture, show the international student around campus and Ormskirk- anything! I had such an incredible experience with this, and wound up with a travel buddy friend for life!

study abroad ormskirk with grand valley summer term

edge hill is an approachable, friendly school in a rural setting. it's a great base to explore other regions of the uk and offers a serene atmosphere. the grand valley program offered classes from the stateside university housed within the ormskirk campus so our experience with academics a edge hill was limited. granted, a few of the buildings were heavily used by students, like the dance/bar/laundry space and the international dorms, but, hey, it's a college replete with students living on their own for the first time. especially conducive to studying were several nooks within buildings that offered quietude. this is a fine place to actually connect with other students as it generally is a slower-paced, relaxed campus environment. transportation to the town of ormskirk itself from campus proper is no problem, and it is a sweet, easy train ride away to liverpool. i felt very safe on campus and generally amidst open-minded individuals.

Higher than 10

If I could rate the summer program at Edge Hill for international students higher than a "10," I would. This year's program included trips to Liverpool, Manchester, the Lake District, and Stratford-upon-Avon, among other things, and every detail was carefully planned and carried out so that the students had the most positive experience possible. Beth Spears was a wonderful addition to the International Office staff, and because her time was dedicated to our travel groups, she was able to make sure everything came off without a hitch. I am very grateful for the work of the entire International staff. Our students loved their time at Edge Hill and their experience in the UK, and I am eager to return with another group in 2018. This experience is everything it should be for college students studying away from home: safe, fun, and welcoming, but also adventurous, wide-scoped, and flexible. A high-impact experience!

As a faculty member, the amount of assistance we get from the International Office at Edge Hill and the efficiency and friendliness of their work makes this one of the most attractive programs I have been exposed to.

What would you improve about this program?
It is perfect as it is, flexible enough to meet the needs of very diverse groups.

Amazing once in a lifetime Study Abroad

Edge Hill University was a fantastic host while our American University visited! During our time there was a perfect balance between classroom time at Edge Hill and day excursions to various cities throughout England. The professors were so kind and welcoming each week we attended class. Edge Hill's campus is beautiful, I really enjoyed the campus overall. Our liaison from the international office Beth strived to give us the best study abroad experience possible! She handled all logistics and each day trip was maximize! She worked so hard Meeting all of needs while we were at Edge Hill.

What is your favorite travel memory?

There are so many to choose from, such as road tripping down the Pacific Coast Highway in California to sailing overnight on a houseboat in Kerala, India. But the one which comes to mind is making my way to the top of Victoria Peak in Hong Kong and taking in views of the city; from up there it was simply incredible.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

I am incredibly lucky in that my role enables me to travel to different countries and I've definitely had my eyes opened up to how big the world actually is and how much more of it I still need to see.

Talking to International students and hearing how they have the passion to study abroad, even when they have never been out of their hometowns really puts it into perspective that these students are the future generation that are going to make a difference in the world.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

We run the 'Global Friends' program for incoming International students to help their integration to UK student life and it's great to see these students and our own UK students form such close friendships.

In some instances, these friendships have resulted in our Edge Hill University student going to study at the International students home institution. More recently, I saw that two students who met through the Global Friends program were traveling together through California. Seeing these lasting friendships form is very rewarding.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

Without sounding too biased, I think if I was an International student I would be keen to join the Study Abroad program at Edge Hill. Not only do students have a wide range of subjects and modules to choose from, but Edge Hill is very close to the city of Liverpool and its airport, which offers inexpensive flights across Europe that suit most student budgets.

So it is incredibly easy to visit other countries during your free time and see more of the world, Amsterdam, Dublin, Paris, and Brussels are all under a 90-minute flight away from Liverpool.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

The level of support our International students receive really sets us apart from other Universities. We strive to make International students feel integrated and welcome from the moment they arrive at the airport with a meet and greet collection service, an orientation week then follows including a welcome event, campus and Liverpool tours and social activities to help meet other students.

Each month there is a free UK trip or event for International students, so we make it easy to see around the UK even if you are on a budget.

How hard the International Office work to support and ensure that our students have the best time was put into perspective recently when we were shortlisted at the WhatUni Student choice awards for best International University.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

I believe communication is the biggest key factor for a company to be successful. Edge Hill provides International students with information in advance on things like module choices, their orientation activities, accommodation, the local area and of course the University facilities.

This helps us ensure that students are well informed and prepared before they arrive which allows the team to concentrate on we what we do best, providing the students with an amazing study abroad experience.
