Beautiful place, beautiful people, beautiful experience!!

Going into my Hawai'i semester with Carpe Diem I wasn't sure what to expect- it was a new program and many of my past plans this year had already been cancelled. What came of the semester was the most transformative and beautiful two months I ever could have asked for.
Learning from Hawaiian natives about Hawaiian sovereignty, practicing earth stewardship alongside my group, and getting to know the beautiful island of Maui are pieces of my experience I never want to forget along with so so many more. I am incredibly thankful to my OE's for being the warmest, most supportive, and caring people ever. My group truly became an 'Ohana throughout our semester and I feel so lucky to have learned from each one of them and call them all friends now.
The Carpe Diem Hawai'i semester was very intentionally planed and thought out. If you are passionate about the environment, social justice, or the outdoors it would be a mistake not to consider this program! :)

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be open to every single opportunity that comes your way! You never know when digging a water trench is going to turn into a mud fight and the highlight of your week. Or when volunteering to harvest turmeric would lead to an atv ride though a bamboo forest. So many of my best memories came from having an open mind and saying yes!

The best out of the best

Omgggg literally life changing. The people the leaders the program structure everything about it was amazing.

At first it was scary. It was an unexpecting experience to take as a Muslimah but one that I’ll never forget. I found myself even more going on this trip. The food was amazing. The adventures were incomparable to the ones previously experienced prior to carpe.

I highly recommend this program to anyone. Great way to feel challenged (in a positive way of course), and develop growth in many levels

Enriching, Educational, and Authentic Hawaiian Experience

Wow! Where do I start. This trip was fantastic. Learning the importance of being a visitor instead of a tourist was a life lesson I would have never learned if I hadn’t travelled with Carpe Diem. You can tell how much effort the company puts into their programs. The leaders with this program make you feel safe and are people you can go to. They ended up being my favorite people on the trip too! 10/10 all around in my experience. Would recommend to anyone considering going on a gap semester trip.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice to future travelers is to go into the trip with an enthusiastic attitude and you’ll get what you give to the experience.

10/10 Experience in Every Way!

My experience on Carpe’s Hawaii program during my gap year was nothing short of incredible. I can’t speak positively enough about my time on program. We had the opportunity to speak with many thoughtful and informative Maui natives and transplants to the island. Each of our work or learning experiences changed my perspective in a distinct way—from permaculture to land clearing to whales all of our programming was unique and engaging. My overseas educators were two of the most passionate, warm, and resourceful people I have been lucky enough to have as mentors. I miss the trip so much already!!

What was your funniest moment?
This trip held so much joy and I created countless happy and hilarious memories. A favorite was time spent in the vans driving to different locations on Maui. I loved dancing and singing with my peers with so much energy and having our overseas educators join in with us!

Amazing time in Hawaii with Carpe!

I left this trip completely changed. I was surrounded by people who were excited to learn and experience Hawaii with me. The trip was planned perfectly and we were constantly engaged with the land and people while having fun. Our leaders pushed us to adventure and try new things that have become some of my favorite memories. We farmed with an amazing community, surfed, swam in waterfalls, worked on conservation, and explored the island in meaningful ways. Being surrounded by love, I learned to see the positive in everything. There was never a moment that I wasn’t excited for our next task because I knew it was perfectly planned by Carpe for us to enjoy and learn. I completely shifted my mindset in Hawaii and am excited to take everything I learned about the environment, sustainability, and myself.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be confident in yourself and who you are. You can be whoever makes you happy because everyone is there for the right reason. Everything is designed for your benefit and it will be amazing if you are ready to have fun. I learned it is impossible to complain while in Hawaii and it will be the happiest 2 months.

An amazingly fun trip, and an important part of my personal growth

Carpe Diem really has their stuff together as an organization.
My trip leaders were real pros and really amazing people, my group-mates were hilarious and fun, every place we stayed had a lot to teach us, and the food was for real fantastic. You definitely won't regret going on a Carpe trip.
I've been on a program or two, and I know what a bad program looks like. Carpe Diem staff are really on the ball, they know how to care for students, and my two months in Costa Rica gave me a better outlook at life.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Probably a soursop. It was tasty, but quite snotty.

New perspectives, meaningful work and powerful connections in the Borderlands

I loved Carpe's Borderlands trip! I was with an amazing group of students who truly cared for on another and were passionate about learning from the place and people we were with.

The program components were spectacular and we had the opportunity to work with contacts that are such incredibly hardworking, knowledgeable, living-out-their-passions type of people who truly brought the topics we were learning about to life. Whether it was Francesca and her vast knowledge of native plant species and the pollinators they attract or Jonathan and Shelly with their visible excitement and dedication to all things social justice, I was so, so inspired by everyone that we worked with and learned from. It was so apparent that Carpe Diem has worked hard to establish a deservedly top-notch reputation and foster deep, valued connections with local scholars/activists/educators/change-makers in the communities where they are sending groups. Carpe's genuine focus on making the most ethical decision at all times is truly remarkable and honorable.

As for the actual itinerary of the trip, it was awesome. Having never been on a backpacking expedition, I was appropriately apprehensive but it turned out to be hands down one of my favorite parts of the trip. We were supported, engaged, and inspired by our amazing guide Treven and although there were certainly challenging parts (who knew how cold it could be in the desert!) we were given all the tools we needed to survive and thrive and I couldn't be happier with the sheer beauty of the Rincón Mountains and the sense of accomplishment I felt at the end. Another part of the trip that I loved was the social justice segment. We learned from authors, residents, and scholars about the border wall and immigration injustice - things I had very little knowledge of beforehand - and then had the incredible opportunity to speak with asylum seekers and newly transitioning migrants firsthand about their experiences. It was riveting, heart-breaking, and truly moving and I think extremely necessary in understanding the full story.

I couldn't recommend this trip more! I was so grateful for the opportunity COVID-19 presented in allowing me to travel within my own country and learn more about problems and solutions right here within our borders.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?

Great, Awesome sorry we had to leave

This trip was full of exciting experiences and unique places, which are way more impactful in person than reading about it. To not take this opportunity will be one your life’s regrets, everyday there is different from the other. Everyday we would learn something new about the Indian culture through our travels and the people we would meet along the way. All while learning new perspectives and outlooks on life, a truly transformative experience. I highly recommend this trip!

However I implore you that this trip is not for everyone. Firstly there is the no phone rule which is a part of the program. In order to get students to be constantly engaged they ask that you do not bring a phone. For me personally, I found this was a welcome break from my everyday technology bombardments. I was a little skeptical at first but found my experience much better without my phone to distract me. If I had my phone, I would have missed small moments like seeing monkeys and animals alongside roadways. But do not worry you are allowed to take your cameras, and a small device capable of playing music if you want.

On this program you will be engaging in numerous voluntary activities, which includes a lot of hard work, but you will be working with your group. That way you have support and can have fun working among friends. You will be paired with two leaders, unlike other organizations, your leaders will be giving you a lot of freedom to explore once you have built trust and shown maturity. Most of the trip will be planned ahead of time, however in one section your group will be given the opportunity to choose their next destination. For me personally this trip has taught me numerous life lessons. The one that stands out for me the most is to not overthink life but live life in the moment as everyday is completely different from the other. This trip is what you make of it, if you put an effort out to engage in the activities, I promise you it will be worth your time and money.

Amazing experiential learning program

Although our trip was cut short because of COVID19, I still had a blast. I made a lot of friends whom I still talk to even after we returned home. My overseas educators Rebecca and Adam were so kind. They made sure we all felt comfortable, safe and supported while we were pushing our limits to what we had done before. I would recommend this trip to anyone, and I urge anyone who hasn’t been to India to go. The food was amazing, and gave me a whole other perspective of cuisine(I’m a foodie). Loved this trip so much.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
1. Relax and enjoy all that India has to offer.
2. Bring sun protection
3. Bring electrolytes. Odd but useful!
