My trip to the Holy Land "Palestine"

My name is Sarah, I am a current postgraduate student at the University of George Town in USA. I had the opportunity to travel to Bethlehem city, Palestine with Volunteer Palestine last summer for a three months program. This opportunity has given me more than I ever could have hoped for when initially signing up for my VP program. In my three months, I volunteered with young children, increased my Arabic skills, and made friends from all around the world. The volunteer work in VP was not easy, but it was extremely rewarding, fun and an overall learning experience for everyone involved. When attending this trip, I knew I would be giving back to the community; but what I didn’t know, was truly how much the community would give to me. Since my time in Palestine, I have learned new things and been exposed to new situations, people and culture. I can only hope that I will have another opportunity like this one again sometime in my life. If you are interested in travel and volunteer, VP is the organization for you.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would like to join the refugee program, I visited a refugee camp in Palestine during my trip and I liked the people so much there. So I am planning to go back and to join the refugee program, to experience the life inside the refugee camp and to know more about the refugee crisis in Palestine.

My Experience at Aida Camp, Bethlehem

The month I spent in Bethlehem while volunteering with Aida Camp was arguably the best month of my life. Not only did I learn about life under occupation in Palestine but I also had a ridiculous amount of fun and made friends for life both with the locals and other visiting volunteers. Working in the camp gave me the opportunity to see first hand the situation of the refugees and to absorb pure Palestinian culture. Despite working hard during the week, I also managed to do a lot of sightseeing and even went on a road trip with some other volunteers. The Palestinian people are the most friendly and hospitable people I have ever met and it was a privilege to be able to spend time with them. I highly recommend this experience to anyone curious about life in Palestine, Palestinian culture and cuisine or simply someone looking to practise or develop their Arabic and have a good time.

As a student of the Arabic language, I would've tried to speak more Arabic where possible because people underestimate the value of being surrounded by a language when learning it. I think if I had made more of an effort to speak Arabic, my fluency would've developed much more during my stay and I could've picked up even more vocabulary.

Discover Palestine

I was wondering is it worth to be there? especially that i traveled to different countries but when you think about Palestine you feel it's not safe but when you be there you have totally different feelings. It opened my eyes in many ways and I learned not be an egocentric person but rather to see and empathize with needy people around me. The people there are very hospitable, nice and kind. Delicious food make you eating all the time. The refugee camp is very safe for local and international because the people there are living like one family. the activities in the center where i volunteered in were organized, dedicated, full of knowledge, fun and informative. it was a great experience to be in Palestine, it's an experience to change your life „Volunteer Palestine“ is the right place to start your life changing experience.

Volunteer Palestine

My experience with Volunteer Palestine was life-changing. Volunteer Palestine gave me the chance to visit the country my parents were born in for the first time. I was able to volunteer with the Palestinian Medical Relief Society. We traveled to rural areas and set up mobile clinics. Everyone I worked with was so nice and welcoming. I made close friendships that I have held onto since my trip. I cannot wait to go back and reconnect with all of the amazing people I met through VP. I was able to see so much of Palestine in just two weeks and the leaders of VP were always available to help me and show me around Bethlehem. I would recommend this program to anyone who wants to experience Palestine and contribute to some of the amazing work people are doing there.

Volunteer Palestine is the best

I volunteered with Volunteer Palestine for five weeks in the summer of 2018. I was located in the Aida refugee camp, where I worked both in the Aida Youth Center and at the local UNRWA elementary school. I stayed at a shared apartment in Beit Jala. My primary responsibility was to teach music with Sanabella, a music student who grew up in the Aida camp, in a 10-day summer camp hosted at the UNRWA school for about 130 children. While overwhelming at times, it was an incredible experience. The children were enthusiastic, energetic, and compassionate. The people of Aida welcomed me with open arms, and I enjoyed my time in Palestine so much I delayed my departure by a week. I made friends I still communicate with, and am actually meeting up with a fellow volunteer in February this year. Looking forward to my next visit to Palestine, and am itching to reunite with my Aida family. :)

What would you improve about this program?
I think it would be helpful to ask potential volunteers a few more questions during the interview/onboarding process related to where they are most experienced and what their primary skills are. This could help reduce the amount of time some volunteers spend feeling like they don't know what to do/how to contribute.
