Turks & Caicos Study Abroad

This was an incredible experience where I was able to practice clinical skills, improve upon developing skills, and work with wonderful patients and supervisors. I have not had the opportunity to work with populations with limited access to care, and this trip really helped me understand how I can be most impactful. I loved being able to learn and grow in my cultural humility in this way. Not only that, but I had such a fun time enjoying the beach, the food, and incredible fellow clinicians. I highly recommend therapy abroad to anyone and I would take the chance to do something like this again.

Cons
  • Limited advanced scheduling of activities

An amazing experience in Turks and Caicos!

This experience was once in a lifetime! We went to Turks and Caicos and provided services to some of the local schools on the island. It was a beautiful place to visit, and all the people I interacted with were wonderful and so thankful for us. Some of the best memories I had were just talking with the students every day about their life. They were always so excited to see us, they ran up to us and hugged us every day. I learned a lot, developed my clinical skills, and even snuck in some time to relax on the beach! I would recommend this experience to anyone!

Pros
  • Beautiful island
  • The people were wonderful
Cons
  • Communication wasn’t always the best

The Best Week!

This past week I went to Turks and Caicos along with the AuD students from my program as an SLP graduate student! Therapy Abroad connected us with the TCI Ministry of Health, allowing us to gain experience and insight of our fieldwork at a systematic level. This experience was the perfect amount of work, while still allowing us to experience the culture (and amazing food) of TCI! I feel my skillset as a clinician grew throughout the week as I got to work with a variety of different ages in different primary school settings. Therapy Abroad always made sure we were taken care of. Our place to stay was in a very central location which made exploring very convenient. An experience I will always be grateful for as I enter my career!

A very informative and beneficial learning experience for my graduate program. I gained hands on experience working with students on the island. It was an amazing and productive time! The opportunity to interact with schools, the ministry of health, and other professionals in the field was enlightening and helpful for my future career. This rich experience supported my future work as a clinician by enhancing my global perspective. If you have an opportunity to do this trip-definitely recommend.

So FUN

The social aspects were amazing! We loved going around to the local restaurants, shops, and getting lots of beach time. The communication though for the program was a bit disorganized. A lot of plans for going to the schools were day of decisions. Navigating without a specific schedule was a little difficult but overall the experience was unforgettable. We had so much fun in the schools and being able to help such a wonderful community. I’ve learned so much on this trip and really enhanced my clinical skills.

Pros
  • Food
  • Safe
  • Cultural
Cons
  • Communication
  • Scheduling

Amazing experience

This was hands down the best experience of graduate school. Learning about the programs and needs on Providenciales, and getting to work with students of all support needs and backgrounds was a great learning experience and worth every minute. Being part of a collaborative team of classmates and professionals was fun and challenging, and we all left feeling like we made a real impact in the schools and for the SLP on the island. 10/10 would recommend, wish I could start grad school all over again and participate in a program with Therapy Abroad 2 more times!

Belize Spring Break

Therapy abroad in Belize was an amazing way to spend my spring break!! It provided so much hands on experience as well as some really fun excursions! Our therapy experience was in all age ranges giving us the opportunity to see different populations. I especially enjoyed visiting the adults at Octavia Waight. They were full of energy and were excited to tell us about their life in Belize. Everyone who guided us throughout the week was very nice and helpful. I would love to go back and do it all again!

Pros
  • Really fun excursions
  • Hands on experience
  • Amazing food

The trip of a lifetime!

The therapy abroad trip to Belize was one of my favorite trips I’ve ever been on! Being able to observe and help facilitate speech therapy services was an incredible opportunity! I’m so thankful I got to experience this trip with my cohort friends! Being able to participate in clinicals first hand is not something we can do in the U. S. My time at therapy abroad validated there is no other career path for me. I learned so many skills that I will definitely use in my future as a speech pathologist!

Pros
  • Getting to explore a new country while helping others
  • Making connections with the therapy abroad staff & supervisors
  • Bonding with my classmates
Cons
  • The trip went by too fast!

amazing trip

This was one of the best trips I've been on. It was a perfect mixture of learning and fun. We worked in preschools and did clinical work for half of the trip and got to enjoy the beauty of Belize for the other half of the trip. The supervisors on our trip were very knowledgeable and I learned so much from them, which will be useful in my future. I loved learning about Belize's culture and the country itself. It was a very enriching experience that I am so grateful for. I definitely recommend this program!

Graduate student

Therapy abroad took care of everything! We had delicious food from start to finish and they set up wonderful culturally enhancing experiences. We also got to Zipline and snorkel, two items that were on my bucket list! The staff was supportive and we got to know them personally. Jaime Vega was there with us along the way and provided her delicious sweets! Aside from the food and support, I felt like I gained critical clinical experiences and learned first hand why it's important to be a culturally competent clinician. I met wonderful people and felt right at home in Belize. I would do this again in a heartbeat!
