An amazing life project

I was volunteer for a month with VIN and I am so grateful. I did the osteopathy project and all the staff helped us with such enthusiasm! What we have done, the people we have met, everything were amazing there. We used to walk to village and village to help them by osteopathy session and improve their daily life. This country is so beautiful and the people deserve to be helped. You make a difference by choosing VIN. You are not just a volunteer, you are part of the Nepali community. Thanks a lot, I wish you the best.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
As a physiotherapist I wish I could stay longer to see my patients a second time and to evaluate exactly how we help them.
Pros
  • Being useful
  • Be part of the Nepali Life
  • Changing your habits and becoming open-minded
Cons
  • You have to learn to be less comfortable

A Fulfilling Experience

I volunteered for VIN in 2019-2020, and I have great memories of it. I discovered a team that was both committed and friendly, working on field projects that directly contributed to the well-being of marginalized populations. I was based 10km from Kathmandu, in Tarakeshwore, where I helped develop the Child Development program. I had the opportunity to audit schools sponsored by the organization and to interact with the community (teachers, children, women, and villagers in general). I wish my mission could have been longer! It was a personally and professionally enriching experience, thanks to both the VIN team and the international volunteers I met along the way.

I wish you all the very best !

Thank you, VIN!

Pros
  • Meaningful impact
  • Engaging Team
  • Cultural Experience

Sharing my experience as a Communication Intern,

Sharing my experience as a Communication Intern, I chose the best platform for my Internship where my skills are recognised and polished by amazing supportive Supervisor Richa maam and inclusive VIN team who are always welcoming.
The whole journey is worth learning with flexible teammates.
I recommend applying here to those who are looking for a platform to kick off their career path.

Welcoming environment boost our motivation on working for the communities and which results in creating impact there and interpersonal skills.

Marketing Advisor

For 2 Weeks, my cousin and I worked as marketing advisor and artistic director. We had to give VIN's a new breath & visibility so more volunteers would be able to help in their hard work. Collaborating with them was a great experience, even if our time was short considering the amount of work on the social medias and most of all on the new website. We did our best to deliver the right things so the team would be able to appropriate their new skills. Our stay was really nice, even considering the sanitary situation that left many beds empty, we had the chance to share great moments with the team and most of all with Dinesh and it's family, those moments will be unforgettable.
The VIN's headquarters in Katmandu are really good and the garden is really pleasant. As said above, we wish we could to extend our stay to help them more but home was calling.
This experience was great and the team is gold.

Thank you

What was your funniest moment?
Sharing those moments with Dinesh family during the Tihar Festival on the day of siblings.

Enriching Interning experience from a Belgian Journalism Student

Hi, I am Bachelor student in Journalism from Belgium. I did a 5 week long internship in the Women Empowerment and Film and Documentary making project. I loved every moment of it!

Everyday I enjoyed my one hour walk to Tinpipple to take pictures of women and their products. The views are beautiful and the people are lovely. I have worked on a project that gives women from marginalised backgrounds the opportunity to set up their own online business. Not a single day passed with me not wanting to go to ‘work’. I was motivated to see and listen to what the women had to tell me. Although it was not always simple to communicate, language isn’t the only means of communication.

It was also a great opportunity for me to practice my journalistic skills. Not only the contact with the local community and the culture, but also patience, flexibility and independence are important. I grew throughout my internships, and this wouldn’t be possible without the friendly and loving staff, and the way Nepali people can give with heart and soul. I feel like even as an intern, I was able to give something, for everything that these 5 weeks gave me!

I would love to return in the future and work on another project.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
If you get the change, really stay at a host family. It’s your second home, and the people are so lovely and warmhearted. When volunteering and interning make sure you don’r think too much about he future and let yourself lead by the events. If you open up, things will open up for you. Just enjoy and try to help with the important work the VIN does!

Great volunteer experience

I volunteered with VIN for 2 weeks through the ICYE program from Volunteer For Peace Vietnam. VIN has a lot of volunteer projects of different lengths and in different areas for international volunteers to choose from. My project was a women's empowerment project called the Raising Peace Campaign. I got opportunities to meet with volunteers from many different countries and worked alongside some local volunteers as well. VIN has many friendly staff who are helpful. Overall, it was a great learning and volunteering experience (and Nepal is a beautiful country with rich culture). Highly recommend.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
For my projects, some other volunteers, VIN staff, and I went to three different communities to talk about domestic violence. It was surprising for me to see how different these communities are, despite the fact that they are only about 30' walking apart. One day, we walked for about an hour up the mountain to teach at a local school. The road was extremely dusty and bumpy, but the mountain scenery was stunning, and within our team, we had some great conversations to learn about each other's cultural backgrounds and work.

My best volunteering experience!

I am a teacher from the UK who has previously spent 5 summer holidays volunteering in education in countries including Guyana, South Africa, Tanzania and India. In summer 2018 I worked with VIN on a 4 week teacher training volunteer programme in conjunction with Limited Resource Teacher Training (LRTT). They were incredibly hospitable and, perhaps more importantly, incredibly well organised. They went out of there way to ensure that every volunteer remained safe and healthy (they benefit from having a practising doctor working within the organisation).

The accommodation is clean however it is quite cramped and there is not much storage space. Be prepared for the vibe of a good but basic hostel. The food prepared on site was delicious and very healthy.

I strongly recommend anyone interested in doing a volunteering programme to work with VIN.

What would you improve about this program?
More storage space in the VIN accommodation and more stable hot water in the showers would make the experience slightly more comfortable but this is a bit nit picking.

Wonderful experience for US Professor

I am an Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education. VIN provided me an opportunity to provide training for 16 ECD teachers from 8 rural schools outside of Kathmandu. The teachers were experienced teachers so during this time I learned probably more than they learned from me. Before the training VIN set up days for me to observe in the classrooms. After the training I conducted post training observations. My two week experience was wonderful. I would recommend this opportunity to other professors in any field. VIN can use your skills to help with any of their programs.

With VIN I was able to plan and deliver early childhood teacher training. It was a wonderful experience. I learned a LOT and hope the participating teachers did too. Staying in the community with a host family made the experience even more meaningful. I would recommend volunteering with VIN to all Professors who would like to do international volunteering. VIN will put all of your experience and knowledge to good use.

What would you improve about this program?
VIN is there to support you if you reach out. They are proactive in helping with the basics and it is up to you to take the initiative to make your project happen....so no improvements are necessary on the part of VIN.

The kids' smiles warm up my heart!

I'm back home now, in Italy, and every morning I recall the beautiful shining smiles of those lovely children I saw during my stay in a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in the outskirts of Kathmandu. I taught them English 4 hours a day, we had fun with Justin Bieber's songs, Bingo and some Nepali games they explained me. I loved watching them falling asleep during the morning prayer, I loved playing with them with a roll of rubber band they called ball and I loved that they touched my hair and asked what it was! It was the best experience of my life, which helped me discover some of my strenghts, weaknesses, and gave an impulse to my future decisions. Thanks to VIN's staff and their support before and during my stay, they made my Nepal experience wonderful!

What would you improve about this program?
I wish there was more collaboration and dialogue between VIN and the manager or people in charge of the places where the volunteers are sent (school, community, monastery), so that the volunteer knows the real needs and can manage even better his/her time for a successful project.
